A Merciful Fate is the 5th installment in the Mercy Kilpatrick series and can be read as a stand-alone; which I should know because I jumped the gun on this series slightly and have read this book before the others. LOL! However, with that said, it was easy to pick up on the familial and group dynamics, the in’s and out’s they all were navigating in their everyday lives, as well as the overall continuing storyline thru the series and not feel lost. I will also say that after reading this book, I will definitely be going back to my bookshelf to grab books 1-4 to see how everything evolved. I truly enjoy Elliott’s work and writing style and have all the books in this series, I have just not made it to them yet in my ever growing ‘to be read’ pile. I must admit I am genuinely intrigued with Mercy’s character and her lifestyle and look forward to learning more about her. An FBI agent and a prepper?! Very interesting, indeed. The characters in this story are fun, engaging and complex and the storyline well-written, intriguing and will keep you turning the pages. There is also a 30-year old bank heist mystery to unravel, multiple vandalisms with threats attached, friends with secrets, hidden agendas, a baby on the way, a wedding to plan, everyday life events to navigate and, of course, life and death situations to survive. This book is definitely full of excitement from the first page to the last. There is also a shocking twist that jumps out of nowhere and it is just wow! I am still shaking my head at that one; I did not see it coming. I am really looking forward to the next book in the series – I best get hopping and get started on the back reads. Ha!*I received a copy of this book via the publisher, Montlake Romance, thru NetGalley and am voluntarily leaving my honest review. All thoughts and opinions expressed are my own.
She can't have a normal emotion. Her chest clutches in fear, her heart pounds, her stomach is knotted, she is immobilized with fear. Merci must live in a constant state of fight or flight. She can't even hear that her sister is in labor without clutching with unbearable anxiety and guilt. Good story if the author would dial Mercy down.
I so enjoy the characters from Eagles Nest, Oregon that I read this series for them as much as for the mystery. The fifth book in the Mercy Kilpatrick series involves a 30-year-old bank heist and two Eagles Nest women being terrorized. Add to that Mercy's, Truman's, Ollie's, Rose's and Kaylie's personal lives full of suspense, too, and I had myself riveted to the book and my reading chair. Well done all the way through. No wandering internal monologues, right-on dialogue, just enough action, and a plot that did not disappoint are all the usual with Ms. Elliot's writing. A pleasure to experience.
First let me say I love Mercy and these books- each one gets better and better. This is a book about secrets-everyone has them. A 30 year old cold case becomes red hot when a body is found in a wooded cabin. Who is it? How does it tie in with a decades old mystery? Mercy Kilpatrick is on the case and soon has almost more than she can handle with several townspeople in Eagle's Nest being targeted by someone out to frighten them-or worse. What is happening here? Watching Mercy work the case, ferreting out the town's secrets is a guessing game that keeps you on the edge until the last page. Twists abound and just as you have figured things out- boy are you wrong. What adds another layer to this is the fact that Mercy holds her own secrets- only her family and her fiance Truman know the real Mercy. She is a prepper, born and raised into a survivalist family. This is something she has to keep secret from everyone she knows. Obsessively preparing for the end of the world, she has a hidden cabin with stockpiles of supplies that would last years- and the training for as many contingencies as possible. This includes extensive first aid training which she has to use in a heart stopping chapter when one of her fellow officers is wounded. The things that Mercy has in her car and uses to save his life-well, I don't know if they really exist or if Ms. Elliot conjured them up- but if they are genuine, I want some!!!! You never know when someone will be shot, right? The prepper aspect is what makes these books so unique- every time I read the next book (I've read them all) I want to run out and start stockpiling whatever I can find! But these books, in addition to being fabulous crime novels do make me aware that I should not just drift through life, assuming everything will be fine. So yes, I signed up for a first aid class(I gotta start somewhere). I love the irony of this character whose career is spent exposing the secrets of others while guarding her own. Mercy is unique among characters- I don't know whether to admire her or feel sorry for her.She has to keep her true self hidden from everyone, she , in fact, lives a life based on fear- fear of catastrophe, fear of the world ending. The need to be in control, to prepare for every contingency can be exhausting. There's a fine line between having things on hand for emergencies and being obsessed- and it looks like Mercy has crossed the line. One wonders what would happen if the end of the world occurs while Mercy is away from town! She is an amazing woman, and a crack FBI agent, but there's a sadness here-trying to control everything is ultimately futile-but watching her preparations is absorbing. This is a terrific stand alone mystery, but to fully enjoy this book, do read the other books in the series, in order. You understand Mercy's back story, her fractured family, her innocent blind sister Rose (who I love) who is pregnant as a result of a rape, her niece and of course her colleagues and Truman, and this lovely little town which seems to have more criminals than San Quentin.Thank you Kendra Elliot for a wonderful read, and a few hours of escape from the real world, which seems to be going mad. How I wish it could all be wrapped up by someone like Mercy Kilpatrick. I can't wait for Book 6,7,8,9 etc!
I've read all the preceding books in this series and have enjoyed them all. I like the characters so much, it's like going home to your family every time a new book is released. Of course, the plot doesn't disappoint either. It never has, as far as I'm concerned. With Elliot's and Melinda Leigh's books, both, I have found it interesting how they don't center all of the books on one character. Instead they give each character his or her time in the sun and make them the focus of a book. In some of the "Merciful" books you will find that Rose, Ollie, or Kayla is more of a leading character. It's not all about Mercy, although she plays an important part. The ability to move the spotlight back and forth across your characters, is a unique and reader-grabbing ability. Keep it up, Kendra!
