I'm halfway through this hard-to-put-down series and I'm going to be very sad when I inevitably reach the 11th book. Waiting for book 12 will be difficult, but fortunately, there is another series by this author which I believe will be just as fabulous and fun as the Space Team series. The main character in that series, Dan Deadman, makes his very first appearance in this book. Although Dan's appearance is brief, he is intriguing and interesting and I want to follow up with him. This book also introduces more fun, lovable characters who, hopefully, will continue to show up in the rest of the Space Team series. I will be reading the Dan Deadman series when I reach the end of book 11 of Space Team. Fortunately, there are still 6 more books to enjoy until then.

(I'm writing the same review for all of the Space Team books, so that you don't miss my "testimony".) The Space Team books are a must read, so what are you waiting for...go read them. Humor + science fiction, what's not to like? Hutchison is a hilarious author, funnier than hell (well, that may not be saying much because, let's face it, everything is funnier than, you know, Hell). The adventures of Cal, Mech, Loren, Miz, and Splurt are TOTALLY BELIEVABLE, in a totally skeptical kind of way, which makes them predictably unpredictable. Giant spider-dragons (or is it dragon-spiders?), crooked president Sinclair, shape shifters (yeah, I'm talking about you, Splurt), and other assorted space creatures and space characters are all here. So, take it from me, a science fiction junkie, start reading the Space Team series and see what you've been missing.

I can't believe I read more than one of these books. They are trite, stupid, predictable, ridiculous, moronic, idiotic, well i could go on,but I think you get the picture. In fact, picture books have more plot development than this series of stories. Not Much is the right name for Cal in this adventure. Say his name as if you have a broken nose and the spelling is about right!Nevertheless, I suppose I'll have to buy the next book just to see how much more ridiculous the Space Team can become. Doesn't say much for my intellect, but there you have it. To paraphrase Obi Wan Kenobi, who's the bigger idiot? The idiot, or the one that follows the idiot?

Each book in this series is better than the last (which is saying something since I'd swear each was as perfect a mix of action, comedy, sci-fi adventure, comedy, fun, more comedy as has ever been written). I have taken to abandoning household chores, social responsibilities, and even sleep to slake my thirst for these great tales of Cal and his Space Team. So, here I sit, dishes piling up, family and friends wondering why I never call, so sleep deprived as to think that anyone wants to read a humorous book review, and I just ordered the next book in the series! Ha, I kid. There are no dirty dishes piling up; who has time to eat when there are more Space Team adventures to read?! Hmm .. quite possibly the best weightloss plan ever devised. Well done, sir! Well done indeed!

Certainly the author, but Splurt is so fonking adorable! Cal would get 2nd shot after Splurt, but I'd probably wind up killing him when he pulled one of his hairbrained scams. Mech is a man's man (not THAT way, not that there's anything wrong with that!), and not much of a conversationalist - unless you turn his dial. Of course Miz pointed out the main problem with Mech and romance. Read the story to understand that one! This adventurous installment has our loyal little family of heroes breaking up the team...The Space Team! Loren takes a powder on the guys, taking Splurt with her, sort of accidentally. That leaves Cal, Mech, and Miz stranded on yet another dismissal planet. Cal misses his team, and attempts to reorganize Space Team 2.0? The New Space Team? The Space Guys...Dudes? Nana and the Dudes? Wait, who's Nana? You HAVE to read this one, it's so satisfying, like finding a Dunkin Doughnuts on an alien planet in a galaxy far far away. Space Dunkin Doughnuts!

Hutchison's Space Team is a real team, working together despite differences. In this installment the team is broken up for a substantial time, and while I missed the zany interaction that usually characterizes the Team, there's still plenty of fun to be had as they work to be together again. As for hilarious dialog, wild plot twists, weird characters, and the further development of the narrative contained in the earlier books, it's all there to enjoy. Get this book, and grab the others if you haven't already done so.

Barry Hutchison delivers another great story in his Space Team series. His characters are quirky, funny, and you just want to hang out with them. (By the way, it is a pet peeve of mine when a story is falsely promoted as “humorous.” When I read those books and don’t even crack a smile I feel cheated... with Hutchison’s books I am never disappointed. As I read, I’m always chucking at their goofy dialogue, much to my husband’s annoyance.)Highly recommended for anyone who likes old school Sci Fi mixed with original characters & irreverent (ok, sometimes hilariously immature) humor.

I keep waiting for Barry to let me down by churning out a tired, cliche, phoned-in book to just keep the characters alive and dollars rolling in, however yet again he delivers something witty and amusing with a dash of clever sprinkled through. I suppose I'll have to keep reading to see if he gets it wrong in the next book.

I wish I had read all the stories that O'Connor uses to make his points on the short story; I would have profited much more from the reading. But he presents enough examples of successful and failed stories by writers such as Maupassant, Turgenev, Kipling, Chekhov, Dostoievsky, Joyce, Mansfield, Hemingway, Anderson, Coppard, and several others that inspire one to read all the ones he mentions as well as entire collections to try one's judgment at the art of literary analysis that O''Connor masters so splendidly.

Since this little volume first appeared in 1963, there probably hasn't been a single book written on the topic of the short story that doesn't make some mention of it.O'Connor was a noted short story writer in his own right as well as an essayist and literary critic. His central premise in this book, that short stories tend to arise out of "submerged populations" (i.e., minority groups, immigrants, etc.) may not have gained wide acceptance in academic circles, but that doesn't diminish the interest or the charm of this book in the least. It's a thoroughly fascinating examination of the short story as an art form, and a rollicking fun read to boot.Much of the "fun" part comes from O'Connor's unabashed and delightfully expressed opinions. Here he is on one of Ernest Hemingway's short story classics:"In 'The Short Happy Life of Francis Macomber' Francis runs away from a lion, which is what most sensible men would do if faced by a lion, and his wife promptly cuckolds him with the English manager of their big-game hunting expedition. As we all know, good wives admire nothing in a husband except his capacity to deal with lions, so we can sympathize with the poor woman in her trouble. [...] To say that the psychology of this story is childish would be to waste good words. [...] Clearly, it is the working out of a personal problem that for the vast majority of men and women has no validity whatever."This may not represent the consensus opinion on Hemingway's story, but what fun it is to see someone stand up to the old pugilist and tweak his nose! This is not to say that all of O'Connor's comments are snarky; he freely calls other Hemingway stories works of genius. And he bubbles over with enthusiasm when discussing many, many other authors as well. For example, regarding two Chekhov stories, "The Dependents" and "Misery," he says:"Never in the history of literature has human loneliness been described with such passion as in these two stories."Speaking of passion, it's clear that O'Connor has a tremendous and joyful love for the short story. Read this book for the pleasure of hearing a true artist practicing his art as he speaks about his chosen art form.

I got this as a gift and it's very very late arriving. However, I have read this myself and think it's a must have - not only for the instruction but for the pleasure.

Thoughtful study on the form of the short story with insightful commentary on such authors as Joyce, Hemingway, Flaubert, and Chekhov.

A recommendation of my favorite English Lit professor. It has taken more than thirty years for me to find a copy!

Excellent study by a master. O'Connor's insights are both instructive for the writer and illuminating for the reader. "The Lonely Voice" enhances the short story experience for all.

THERE ARE SEVERAL STORIES EACH STORY IS BETTER THAN THE ONE BEFORE IT, I LOVE READING HIS WORKIN SEVERAL STORIES I FELT LIKE IT WAS A FAMIY EXPERIENCE

Well, I guess this review is an attempt to be fair. I just reviewed another book with the strong recommendation that a person check the book out (pun intended ...) at a local library to see what they're getting before spending the money to buy it. My purchase of THIS book is a direct result of my having done just that!To put it in context, I'm a recently-retired person who has played AT golf for years without ever really "playing" the game. Post-retirement, I decided that it was time to see - once and for all - if golf is (for me, at least) worth the effort. I've joined a club, taken a few lessons, and continued to look around for interesting things to read and valuable ways to learn. I happened upon this book while browsing my local library and checked it out ... the price was right ...why not?! I read through it, cover-to-cover, (not in one sitting) all the while resisting the temptation to dog-ear the pages I wanted to come back to (trying to be a good library citizen) and quickly realized that there was no way I'd remember all that I wanted to re-read. See my earlier comment about being recently retired ... Senior Moments Abound.Found the book, at a fair price, on Amazon ... Problem Solved! Is it the "Best" book of its type? I have no idea! Are there others as good or better? Possibly so. All I know is that, for me, at this stage in my game learning/development, this book is a fantastic resource. The book has a lot of good, helpful information for me at this stage, and seems to be one that will remain of value as my game improves (please ...???) and my needs become more advanced.

Private Lessons is a good start for beginners looking to "ease" into golf without too much over-instruction and over-analyzing. Yes, there are plenty of instructions and tips within the book; however they are not overly technical and the illustrations are paired with easy to follow instruction and tips. For intermediate and advanced players, Private Lessons is the perfect "little reminder" of the basics. The one complaint I have is that topics are spread throughout the book and not just in one particular section. For example, when you look at the index, you will see that instructions and tips for "Driving" can be found all throughout the book. For players looking to work on one particular part of their game this may be too much to dissect. My advice, is to "flip" through the book once and then begin implementing the instructions and tips as you see fit. See you on the green!

Great book that neatly and conveniently places all of their private lessons in one area, vice having lots of magazines.

This is a must have book for any one that plays golf and wants to improve their game. It covers the gambit from tee to green and every thing in between. I have played for many years an often go back to the book for advice when I am having trouble with a particular aspect of my game. For a young player that wants to understand the mechanics of a particular shot to those who have been around the game for many years and need a refresher on shot making, I would highly recommend it.

I haven't played for awhile, so I was rusty and scoring around 105 usually. After 2 weeks of study and practice my score is now around 95 and dropping.

This book is excellent.Golf Magazine Private Lessons has been around forever but most of the lessons have been lost or misplaced by subscribers. This book brings numerous lessons to the reader and stores them for future use.... when needed. Highly Recommended!

Nothing replaces spending an afternoon with the golf pro, but for beginners or those needing to work on a few bad habits, this is the perfect book. Great for getting few tips after a round of slicing and hooking.

Beautiful book, very good tip for all experience.
