Book three of the four part Dublin Trilogy is actually an insert acting as a prequel going back 18 years to a formative period in several of the Trilogy's major characters' lives. Front and center is Bunny McGarry who came across as a hardened sleeze ball in A Man With One of Those Faces, the opening entry in the Dublin Trilogy. Profane, obese, unwashed, and a violent rogue cop, he was no one a normal person would seem to want to have in their lives. Going into more depth, entry two, The Day That Never Comes softened his image considerably with tales of the many people Bunny has aided in his speckled career. Angels in the Moonlight continues that bent by introducing us to a younger and far more innocent McGarry. Along the way in his trial by fire he/we will meet bent cops, a kid he saved in a fire years ago now making his play to be Dublin's drug kingpin, a runaway jazz singer who captures his heart, rogue nuns with an agenda as well as a killer for hire FBI agent and a cop friend who will test his loyalty to the limits. If he survives he will not come out untouched by the flame. My only caveat was the video game/Hollywood action hero antics near the end that snapped the believability of the story up to that point. Superior world building, fetching characters, fast moving plot line and a few surprisingly tender moments highlight this entry into my greater European crime drama series of choice.Note: to complete the back story to the Dublin saga I recommend the free download of How To Send A Message at Caimh McDonnell's website: whitehairedirishman.com Amazon does not allow outside links so you will have to type it in by hand. A collection of various short stories, the back story on the rogue nuns caught my fancy as did several of the other shorts included. Freebies tend to be garbage where this writing was the equal to his longer work.

I loved this book! It takes my favorite character from the Dublin Trilogy (Detective Bunny McGarry) and transports us back to 1999. (On the edge of Y2K doom, among other far-more-tangible threats) McGarry’s further adventures (or should I say – his previous adventures) are very, very entertaining. Caimh McDonnell is a great storyteller. You can’t wait to turn-the-next-page. Of course, as expected, we get a great crime adventure filled with action and suspense. It is a fascinating look inside the An Garda Síochána and Ireland. McDonnell has clearly done his homework. However, a real bonus is the humor. McDonnell writes great dialog and many’s the time I had to put the book down to recover from a fit of laughter. His great, dry Irish wit is on ample display. He throws darts at some deserving targets that we love to see skewered. I cannot get enough. So, when you finish this outstanding read you will want to follow the further adventures of Detective Sergeant Bunny McGarry and the Gardaí in the first two books of the Dublin trilogy: A Man With One Of Those Faces and The Day That Never Comes. In addition, rumor has it that the third book in the Dublin trilogy is coming our way soon. That’s good news for anyone who likes a great, entertaining story well told.

I continue to enjoy this author and his writings. This is another well written novel with a decent plot and with enough intrigue to keep things rolling along.I seldom critique anyone English nor sentence structure but in this case I consider it only right to report that once again I find this novel like the others flawless. This point may not be thought of as a big deal but there is nothing more distracting than being bombarded with poor sentence structure and spelling errors. If I was to point out what I do see as a fault it is the numbering of the novels in the trilogy. In my opinion this, the third book should be read first. By so doing one would better understand conflicts in the books presently numbered one and two.Critic

Angels in the Moonlight was a fun read. As the subtitle states, this is a prequel tothe Dublin Trilogy, set in 1999, and fleshes out the Bunny McGarry character from thoseearlier novels. The McGarry we knew through those stories was an irascible, unpredictableloner and often a deus (of chaos)-ex-machina. Angels in the Moonlight humanizes Bunny through three main story lines. There'sa love story when McGarry meets Simone, a mysterious, sultry American on the lam.We meet Bunny's partner in the Garda, Gringo. Some of the best and funniest dialoguein the book is contained in their conversations. And a cops and robbers story where theGarda has to take down a ring of Dublin thieves attempting to branch out into thedrug trade. I read the book in two sittings and probably would have finished it in one if I hadn'tstarted it so late in the day. The three arcs work well together and are intertwined in away that keeps you repeatedly going to just one more chapter late into the night. McDonnell injects a lot of humor into his novels and there were some very funnymoments in Angels in the Moonlight. The dialogue is wonderful (and us Yanks get tolearn a lot of Dublin slang) as well as hilarious situations, like the opening scenewith the "jumper". A review I read of his first book, "A Man with One of Those Faces",compared McDonnell to Carl Hiassen and Elmore Leonard. That's a very apt descriptionof his fiction. In the same mold would be Don Winslow’s early books with Neal Carey,Gregory McDonald's immortal Fletch series, George Chesbro's more obscure Mongoseries, and of course the multiple series of Tim Hallinan. If you’ve enjoyed any of thoseauthors, you'll love this book. I read the Kindle edition and the copyediting was well done. I didn't spot any misspellingsand there weren't any jarring errors in layout that interrupted the read. To be completely transparent, I received a review copy of Angels in the Moonlightfrom the author after he asked for review volunteers on his mailing list. But I don't knowthe author. I've just enjoyed the previous books in the Dublin Trilogy and thank thereviewers who convinced me to give Caihm McDonnell a try.

Forty years ago I stupidly sold my last boat. I have missed it every day since. It was my sixth and best boat, a Chrysler Lonestar. Three of these six boats I built myself, one I shared the work with my father. Building a plywood boat is a bagatelle particularly using the stitch and glue method. The seventh boat is built by this method. In the process I have bought six books from Amazon though all of the information that I needed was free on the internet. The books are “Go Build Your Own Boat” and Build The New Instant Boat by Harold Payson, “Boats with an open Mind” by Philip Bolger, “Boat Building For Beginners” by Jim Michalak, “Ultra Simple Boat Building” by Gavin Atkin and “Understanding Boat Design” by Ted Brewer There are separate reviews for each of these books.Ultra Simple Boat Building” by Gavin Atkin is an excellent book for the home builder and I give it five stars. It features 17 very complete plans and instructions for a number of small plywood boats. The diagrams and dimensions are easy to read. Adkin's designs have flotation chambers which are a great safety feature. He explains Epoxy stitch and glue and polyurethane stitch and glue. He also includes a technique called simplified chine log construction. This method places a frame member outside of the hull along the chine. Bolger used this technique in Tortoise and justified it on grounds that it made the boat easier to clean and protected the plywood chine. He believed that it was hydrodynamically satisfactory. For small slow moving displacement hulls he is probably correct. For faster powered planing hulls I have my doubts. It is not completely clear that it really simplifies the construction over say placing the chine log inside the hull in the conventional manner. No matter, the resultant boat will probably be satisfactory. Most of these boats are small and narrow with low sides and are suitable for quiet waters. I know of one individual who takes one off shore here near Los Angeles where it is paddled like a kayak. He has not yet drowned and probably will be okay. Adkin also included plans for a “Puddle Duck Racer”which would be a great choice for someone who enjoys camaraderie and mild competition. I am intrigued by “Dogsbody” which of the offerings in this book is my favorite. One should pay attention to the recommended loadings of Atkin's boats for it could be catastrophic to over load them. Adkin presents a method, not his own apparently, of building a skiff that requires no plans. I found this intriguing because I and a partner once (1953) built a boat using a very similar method. That boat was assembled using glue and light framing with brass screws. I think it cost less than $20 at the time. It saw frequent service with a 5 hp Johnson outboard and lasted at least 10 years when I lost track of it. Adkin offered a piece of simple advice. When going to the store always buy a clamp. You cannot have too many clamps. I think Norm Abrams (This Old House) once made a similar recommendation.

This book is not for the amateur boat builder looking for simple easy to understand step by step instructions. This book is confusingly written and definitely NOT for the beginning boat builder expecting to see simple step by step instructions to follow to build a boat. This is easily one of the most confusing books with unnecessary BS I have EVER read.I read the entire book and couldn’t build not one of these boats if my life depended on it.I couldn’t even do it with the help of the book because it’s that bad you turn to the pages with the actual boat designs and specifications and that’s all you get no step by step no take this and cut to this length then set to the side and take this and cut this length. None of that at all.Just numbers and figures and your supposed to just figure it out.

Not as creative as I hoped it would be.

This book belongs on the shelf of anyone who is contemplating building their own boat. This book was a special treat for me because there is a picture of a boat I built in it. The prospect of building a boat can be very overwhelming. It is a process of figuring out your needs and then deciding on an appropriate design. This is followed by determining if you have the tools, money, space, skill, and time to see a project go from a pile of wood to a pleasant afternoon sailing on a local lake with your family. If you are like me you begin this process by reading as much as you possibly can prior to actually creating sawdust. Gavin Atkin's book is divided into two parts. The first part deals with the "how" to build a boat. Although you may supplement this information with additional material from other sources, Atkin gives enough practical information to actually build a boat. Atkin makes building a boat for someone who has never done it seem very doable, even fun. The second part of the book is filled with designs to whet the appetite of anyone whois in the process of trying to decide what would would be the right boat for them. Mr. Atkin includes complete plans for seventeen of his own designs, all very doable, plus he reviews designs done by other popular designers. My boat recently succumbed to dry rot and was hauled to the dump. I am now in the process of deciding which is the "right" boat to build and Gavin Atkin's book, "Ultrasimple Boatbuilding", has renewed my interest in building my own boat again.

This is a good book to get someone started in boat building. It starts out with easy to follow explanations of the tools and techniques needed to build very simple but useful plywood boats, such as the author's "mouse" series. He outlines three different methods of assembly using, timber joints, fiberglass tape and epoxy, and polyurethane glues with open mesh type fiberglass drywall tape. With the latter two methods, the hull panels are temporarily stitched together with adhesive tape, zip ties or wire ties. He gives detailed explanations on each of these three methods. He also provides thirteen of his own designs, which include his popular "mouse" series, two powerboats, and three sailboats. The smaller "mouse" boats are probably tiny enough to tiny enough to store in an apartment, which might make them appealing for those who have no outside property to store their boats. He also shows examples from other ply boat designs, both well known, such as Bolger and Michalak, as well as less well known ones. The only quibble I have is his method drawing the various panels which make up the hull. His method, though workable (it took me some time to figure it out) is not standard in the boat building world. So, anyone who gets used to his method might be lost at sea when trying to draw panels from another designer's work.Other than that, I think it's good enough to earn a permanent place on my bookshelf.

This is a lovely book, but I returned it because we decided not to go to Romania this year. It would be especially nice for someone who is taking a tour because of the photos and descriptions without details about logistics. We were planning to drive and travel independently. I thought some of the driving tours were very nice. I would buy it again when we travel there.

Excellent guidebook. Thorough information, beautiful pictures by Steve Weinberg and interesting articles about culture (music, resistance fighters, Constantin Brancusi, myths, mining, fauna, healing waters, romanian art, gypsies, winemaking). It features a guided walk of old Bucharest, a few driving tours across the countryside (Muntenia, Oltenia, Transylvania, Banat, Maramures and Moldavia) and boat tour of the Danube Delta. I'm giving it 4 starts because the only city map featured is that of Bucharest. It includes some logistics details and lodging/dining options, but I always check the Internet for the latest news about that. All in all, a great guidebook.

best tour guide for the country. Read it carefully before going and decide by what you read what to visit and what to leave for another visit. Read the travelwize part where it reminds you of the fact that even short distances will kill a lot of hours due to the roads. Use the book and you will be rewarded.

11 years old-I am a travel agent and need more current info. Returned for a full refund.

Great photos

Good book for Romania! Great info about the country, top sites to visit, customs, etc. Used it for my trip to Romania! Was great!

It's great to see a book on Romania published by the prestigious National Geographic. There are many attractive pictures, maps and travel ideas and it is overall a great resource for someone who is introduced to this East European country. However, as an amateur photographer and someone who lived and traveled through Romania for many years, I have to point out 2 cons. First, the book is very much oriented towards the old and traditionalism, and you will have a hard time finding any buildings built after WW2, yet alone after the fall of communism (1989). I love the old yet it would have been nice to see at least a few pages dedicated to the more modern facade of Romania. To some degree, it feels like a National Geographic Magazine from the 60s. Second, I am very surprised at some of the choices for photographs. As a prime example the village of Vinga is represented by an ordinary church when it has one of the most famous and impressive churches in Western Romania - a huge Bulgarian Cathedral. Arad, a city of close to 200,000 which used to be called "little Vienna" due to its architecture, gets one picture: a glimpse of a local market.

Interesting facts and tips for visiting Romania.

This book covers an important aspect of the early civil rights movement in America. I think I bought it before I had an Amazon account. I came at it as a former railroad regulator and a general railfan interested in the history of passenger trains. Despite its technical subject matter, I found it engaging. What I mean by the title here -- historians who cover some of the less glamorous or less well known sides of our nation's history should be applauded. They do it out of a love of history, not to make money.

Mentally reviewing Chateauvert's book, my first impression is that its thesis belies its title. One of the several points made by the author is that the Brotherhood of Sleeping Car Porters never permitted its women's auxiliary any sort of equality with it. The Brotherhood may have used its auxiliary as a tool but always remained "the boss" and, when it no longer felt the auxiliary organization to be useful, abolished it. Even the women's own perceptions and goals supported supremacy of their husbands over their own unperceived rights as individual workers. No, there was definitely no "marching together," the title notwithstanding. The Brotherhood was always in the lead and the "little woman" was respectfully trailing behind.Beyond the misleading title, Chateauvert makes a number of historically accurate observations, none of which are surprising given the social and cultural beliefs and attributes of the era: - Both the Pullman Company and the railroads as employers were totally segregated along racial lines and did not afford their black employees any sort of equality with whites in terms of job assignments, pay scales, promotions, levels of authority, rest periods, or any other aspect of employment, hardly a surprising revelation in the early to mid-twentieth century United States. - This discriminatory treatment led to the gradual formation of the first black labor union in the nation. - The union itself, however, was blind to its own highly discriminatory practices, being just as intractable where the sex of employees was concerned as were the railroads where race was the factor, dropping the word "maids" from its official name early on and essentially ignoring the problems of female sleeping car workers. - Despite their treatment by the union as "second class citizens," the wives of porters supported the Brotherhood by encouraging porters to join, collecting dues, and holding organizational meetings. - The wives themselves felt that they would achieve higher social standing not by their own work but through their husbands' increased union wages, for those would enable them to leave a workforce where women did not belong and become full time housewives, which was the status to which they aspired. Strange though such a concept seems today, it was prevalent through much of the twentieth century. While these and similar observations are accurate enough, they will come as no surprise to anyone who has either lived through or studied the culture of the United States as it persisted through the past century. From this perspective, it does not appear as though Chateauvert has added anything to our existing body of knowledge. Even though her book may be redundant so far as revelatory material goes, yet it might still have made a contribution had its readability, wit, charm, or other attribute encouraged the public to savor it. Unfortunately, the writing is deadly dull and highly repetitious.Almost as bad as its plodding, uninspired style is the fact that the text contains a number of grammatical errors. The author repeatedly uses the present tense verb "forbid" where the past tense "forbade" is obviously called for. On page 37, she writes of a "principle organizing strategy" where the adjective should have been "principal," an error repeated on page 145. On page 106, she coins the adjective "confrontative" although the language already has a recognized word for that purpose, "confrontational." Ten pages further on, we wonder if she understands the basics of railroad technology even though the railroad industry underlies the organization about which she is writing, for she misapplies the word "locomotive," limiting it purely to steam-powered locomotives although the term applies equally to diesel-electric power, which she names an "engine." One page later, she refers to the operating trades as "operative" job classes, further revealing her lack of knowledge of railroad occupations. Her constant, sophomoric use of the term "lily-white" to describe segregated unions, while accurate enough, becomes annoying through unimaginative repetition. On page 170, the ordnance (i.e., munitions) industry is misnamed the "ordinance industry." Only twelve pages later, she appears to confuse "sufferance" for "suffrage," the application of voting power. In brief, MARCHING TOGETHER appears flawed in that it neither offers new information on social and economic conditions of twentieth-century United States society nor presents well-known data in a new and interesting manner. The book may have value to historians of organized labor (although there were never more than 1500 members of the BSCP women's auxiliary) and perhaps to sociologists who wish to collect further examples of race and sex-related discrimination during the time period under examination. Unhappily, I can find little else to recommend it. Readers who are particularly interested in the formation of the first black labor union and its contribution to the United States Civil Rights Movement of the 1960s will find RISING FROM THE RAILS: PULLMAN PORTERS AND THE MAKING OF THE BLACK MIDDLE CLASS by Larry Tye a more informative source than Chateauvert's book.

I had the honor of taking several classes taught by Dr. Chateauvert at the University of Maryland. I strongly recommend any book that she's authored or contributed to as her insights are always deep and encourage an even deeper exploration of the subject by the audience.
