I bought this book as a gift for my nephew, who is a huge baseball fan. He is 9 years old and in 3rd grade. This is a chapter book and is perfect for his reading level.

My 11 year old nephew is hooked on these books. Getting children to read anything is great and these books are great from an informative and enjoyable point of view. Lots of info packed in a manageable size book. Lots of facts and tidbits. Nephew is a huge MLB fan so this was even more enjoyable for him.Great series of books!

As a student, I learned from version 9 of this book. As a first-time linguistics teacher, I used the most current edition, which at this time is 11. They've kept a lot of the fundamentals the same, reorganized some things, and of course updated the content with more contemporary concepts (the most obvious being the section on language and computers). For the first-time teacher, this book is perfect since you can pick and choose from the well-organized sections you want to address in your class. The accompanying exercises are great practice, both for in-class demonstration, and to assign as homework.

This is a rental, so I have to return it, I can honestly say though, if I had the money, this is a book I would LOVE to have in my collection. This book was assigned for a class I have called "Language Foundations," a linguistic class. I may be biased about the book because I have a truly amazing professor who teaches out it, but I really think thats a testament to why she chose this particular book to teach from. It explains language and the elements of it in such a thorough way and I can see this book helping people who want to learn another language besides English, those who struggle with bridging the gap between understanding English rules and speaking it, as well as those wanting to learn English. This is a top notch publication.

This textbook is easy to read because it specifically explains each linguistic term and provides examples. In the end of each chapter, there are exercises and activities that go along with the corresponding chapter. I needed this textbook for a Linguistics class I am currently taking, and I really like it so far. I have already learned a lot of new information regarding linguistics, specifically phonetics. I feel like this textbook can even be used for senior high school students who are interested in basic linguistics.

Large book, tough to carry around, but important to have and a keeper for your bookshelf if you are a Linguistics major or any foreign language major. I come from New England, where the dialect and sounds of the accent are very obvious to many people. I am also a French language major. This book helps you understand why people speak the way they speak, citing examples all throughout the USA so that one can understand and relate it to other world languages.

I teach linguistics and, therefore, have reviewed many linguistics textbooks. This one is by far the most comprehensive and student-friendly. The complexities of phonetics, morphology, syntax, etc. are relayed in accessible language with clear examples. The layout is well organized with multiple ways of finding the information that one might need (for example, look a word up in the glossary and get the "file" number for a more thorough explanation; need to quickly reference a phonetic symbol -- merely flip open the back of the book). Highly recommended for introduction to linguistics.

Required Text for my Introduction to Language class. Actually ended up enjoying the subject and the book.

This is a must-have book if you are willing to learn more about linguistics, particularly in you are in college. It contains a section a the end of each file to practice according to the topic studied (phonetic, phonology, morphology, and so on).

This is a good book. It goes into detail about all the different varieties and pronunciations of English and Sign Languages. It is divided nicely and has great built-in quizzes and food for thought.

What a great book! Okay, I may be a little biased because I have a poem in it, but then, I loved the first volume (about animals) and I didn't have a poem in that one. Whoever thought of pairing photos from the National Geographic archives with poetry for children is a genius. And then to pick J. Patrick Lewis to edit it! (He's the former Children's Poet Laureate of the United States.) The other thing I like about the collection is that it has more than 200 poems. Poetry collections for kids sometimes have only 14 or so poems, but this is a big book and a veritable feast. When I got my copy I sat down in my reading corner with a happy sigh, ready for a nice long stretch of good stuff. Plus it has poems in it by some of my favorite poetry people on cool topics like sailing stones and brinicles (I'm looking at you, Laura Salas!). The only thing left to say is ENJOY!

I LOVE this book. It has beautiful and interesting photographs from all over the world. The pictures alone are worth just thumbing through and gazing at. It makes me want to learn how to use my camera! Lol. The various poems by people from all over are an added bonus. The poems have varying degrees of length but none are super long. Many are from poets and well known authors. There’s nothing more than a page long. This book is appropriate for any age, little kid to grandparents. It is definitely a nice table book and would make a great gift for someone. It’s about 175 pages long and definitely worth the price paid.

This book is amazing! The photos are fantastic and the poetry is beautiful! The only reason I docked a star is because the cover arrived torn and the actual book under the cover is different than the cover and it’s ugly. So now this awesome book either has to look ripped or boring and ugly.

Absolutely superior pictures inside. Great gift, or coffee table book. Used it in 6th grade for my son's project on a book report for alliteration examples.

There are some classic themes that run through many of today's modern decks. These authors clearly had no understanding of the Rider Waite system. The art is more more a collage of travel pics taken by them and are not really a reference to any archetypes that I am aware of. I am a level 6 tantric yogi and don't see any themes or geometric patterns that could be meditation aids, they are really just a hot mess. (They have a card with a picture of a Lion and call it Dangerous Pussy -- Ummm really?) . Plenty of people like them so I may be wrong but just know that these are not tarot they are an oracle, and they are not really related to Tantric Meditation they just have some indian art images in them. If you like collage art you may love them.

I've been using this deck as my primary for about 5-6 years now. Though I enjoy traditional tarot decks and various oracle cards - such as the Osho Zen and the Tao Oracle, which I also love, these are the symbols that speak to me the deepest. The authors have done an excellent job on the book, and I find myself being drawn into learning more and more about Tantra and Dakinis!

I enjoy this deck and I do a tarot meditation with it very often. It's accuate readings and interpretation resonates with the issues and questions I may have and solutions on what to do/what to come, the different spreads this oracle deck offer is in depth and bringing light to the shadows of my denial. I wish this book never ended. Very peaceful and enjoyable read that made me feel I was right there in St. Barts. When you live in a cold climate during winter this book is a great escape.

This book is a joy to hold as well as read. So much thought went into the design, the size, the beautiful paper. And mission accomplished! Reading it brought back so many wonderful memories of the years we spent going to St. Kitts in the winter. The warm impressionist, Caribbean-y watercolors are wonderful.
