About the Author

Kevin J. Anderson has authored over forty bestsellers. As a Rush and Neil Peart fan, my opinion is biased but I love this book. I've purchased every version of it including hardback, paperback, comics, and this one. It's a great story of a boy who learns what coming of age and life is all about and the adventures he had along the way. It's a quick and easy read that keeps you interested and is very relatable.

A very beautifully illustrated version of Peart and Anderson's steampunk universe. The pacing is very well done and the characters are consistent throughout the entirety of the novel in appearance and character. A perfect companion piece to the very powerful concept album.

I read the book and wasn't disappointed by the graphic novel which did the book justice!

Great companion to reading the Clockwork Angels book. If teens don't like to read but like the album, this is a cool companion piece.

Rush, is rush

This is the third incarnation of Clockwork Angels. First there was the Rush album, then the novel by Kevin J. Anderson, and now this, with illustrations by Nick Robles. I think the album is tremendous, and the novel was a lot of fun, especially given all the Rush easter eggs throughout. The graphic novel, however, suffers in comparison, and the reason is clear: The story simply is not strong enough, and this format exposes those weaknesses.For an album, the story can meander and have weak points, as lyrics often have their own logic, and the bass, drums, and guitar add layers all their own. The music itself provides depth where the narrative may be lacking. In the prose novel, Anderson and Peart clearly had a ball fleshing out the story and playing in the steampunk world Peart had originally envisioned. Even if the story is a bit childish, the sense that the authors were treating the fans to something special really came through.In the graphic novel, though, the story is asked to hold up with minimal dialogue, so there's a return to the basic lyrics of the album, and the art just cannot hide the faults the way the music did on the album. To be fair, the art is quite good. Robles does an admirable job showing the characters and especially the scenery of this world. The story itself is what gets clunky, and this version just can't recover. The authors declare that they are already at work on a sequel, and I wonder if it will be better when freed from the constraints of matching an existing album and novel. If they can create a story with rhythms that go better with the graphic novel format, I'd certainly be happy to see it. As it stands, though, the best way to experience this story is with the original Rush album.

Louise Bourgeois was one of my first creative loves. Her psychological take, her visceral story telling, made me think of the feminine and entrapment without transcendence or clarity; it clears your head but she was holding on to the dear end to her sorrows. Even so, her work made me feel understood, almost oceanic. I had no idea she was in therapy; it was implied but never verified. This is an eye-opener and a telling tale of her thoughts and obsessions. I feel the sound of her voice is clear in this collection. There are also images. Tell tale signs. I felt the enclosure for the two volumes was a bit flimsy but the overall impression is solid. I recommend to all those who have loved LB and continue to do so but also those who need an introduction. Man or woman. Cat or dog. Though she never needed my approval. Whose approval was she looking for? Her own? You'll see...

What an amazing artist and thinker. Her gift of her own personal psychoanalytic journals and the accompanying reprints of some of her most interesting work should be coveted by those who want to better understand the process of artistic creation.

Amazing! This is much more than your average art book. It's a comprehensive account of Bourgeois's life and career, in a box-set of two books. The main focus of the pair is The Return of the Repressed. The first half is mostly text, but each section is introduced with full-page reproductions of some of her greatest pieces. This book's rich psychological assessments of Bourgeois's artwork are much more than you could expect to gather from a museum visit. The meaning behind her work is so beautifully detailed in the text. Reading it launched my experience and understanding of Bourgeois into the highest realm. It's a very personal account of her adherence to psychoanalysis, and how it is displayed within her art. Very compelling - lots of Freudian analysis. The latter half of the book is solely devoted to images. It is printed on very nice high quality paper. The second book included in the box - Psychoanalytic Writings - is devoted to Bourgeois's own writings, much like a diary, interspersed with family photos. This content was clearly just intended for her personal catharsis, so it gives a very interesting glimpse directly into her thought process. This is a great buy - it's all you could ever need or want to know about Bourgeois.

Just finished this study with a group of high school girls and I would highly recommend it. It was our final study for a couple of seniors that had learned different study methods and so this was perfect to follow that. I love that she has you look at both the ESV and NIV in this study to find a clearer meaning to certain words. We used the videos- the girls I had really liked her as well. You definately would want to use the video along with the book. We learned so much and I personally grew from this very thorough study.

Good study, but not my favorite. If you watch the videos to go along with the study, the place in the book for taking notes with the videos is just a blank page. Beth Moore studies are much much better....with more thourough studying of the original Biblical language, more personal touches, more relational application, and more â€œpassion.â€

This Bible Study by Jen Wilkin is great for digging deeper into that book of the Bible. You are encouraged to first see what truths God reveals about Himself and then to mine the treasures of truth in each section going verse by verse. I have done a few of Jen's studies and always come away falling more and more with Jesus each time. I also think this study is great on its own but is even better when you can view it with the accompanying teaching whether alone or in a group setting. I highly recommend this study and plan to go through it again!

It's time to learn and apply the Word in a theologically sound and whimsically delightful way. This is one of the authors who will lead you through the text in the way God intended it to be read and applied.

It's always great to study God's Word! Almost half way through with our Women's Bible Study group at our church. It has made more clear that Christians are not by any means perfect, and Peter is a "perfect" example of that! God wants us to put Him first in our lives, getting to know Him by studying His Word.Jen Wilkin's studies have been wonderful, and this is no exception!

This is the study that sparked within me, a love for dissecting and studying Godâ€™s word. I love that Jen Wilkin â€œhand holdsâ€ you through each text to extrapolate as much as you can. This 1 Peter study was so humbling and Christ exalting. All of the ladies in my womenâ€™s group were challenged yet encouraged. I loved this study so much that I ordered and studied her sermon on the mount study after.This would be a great gift or group study. Please consider buying it!

I absolutely love this study. Jen Wilkin walks you through 1 Peter without overwhelming you. I enjoy that she teaches you a few verses at a time. This has been a great study for me and I highly recommend this to everyone regardless of what "stage" you feel like you're in on your walk with Christ.

This study is designed to make the reader dig and dig deep. I have noticed I've grown in my spiritually since working through the day by day study. If you want to find yourself understanding God's character then seriously consider this study of 1st Peter!

This is a sequel to Lady Anne's pornography of the 80s, where she exquisitely wrote about sex in a fairy tale kingdom.This novel has some erotica, but is much more story centered and complex. It is written wisely and feels different from the previous trilogy which seemed to be all sex.There's sex here, but more on the people and the changes they must get through. It was delightful. Anne is such a vivid writer.

Beautyâ€™s Kingdom wasnâ€™t as great a read as the first three books. It lacked the heart of the trilogy. The first three books took me less than three days to read. They were exciting. Begging to be finished. This book took me a few days to get through. I didnâ€™t want to pick it. It was a forced read.

Great series for those with a taste for the darker side of sexuality. This book is the most tame in my opinion but still very good. I like how they took such a classic children's tale and spinned it so well.

This book takes place 20 years after the third book ended and Beauty inherits the kingdom and its traditions while making changes to the way it operates. The vast majority of this book is just reestablishing the world and all of the changes that Beauty makes to it.It brings back most of the old characters while adding a few new ones as well, but again, most of the new characters are there to help establish what's being changed in the Kingdom.

Ms. Rice has concluded the adventures of Beauty in the most intriguing way. This was an unexpected twist from the previous installments, yet still just as compelling. With an open mind, it is easy to explore the 'Kingdom' and discover an alternative lifestyle that provokes the musings of the unexpected.

All the characters are there. The story not as randy as the previous 3. Still good but it seems this was just written to close the gap on the previous 3. I recommend it if you have read the others.

I have read them all and truly loved them until this one. It was the greatest disappointment or my reading life . Tragic how far less this is to the first book . Just really pissed and let down

I have read the other three books in this series and this one was not one of my favorites. I found it to be extremely slow paced. I almost set it aside, but didn't. I kept hoping that it would get better. I wouldn't recommend this book unless you want to finish out the series.

"A scream, a screech, then footsteps running" . . . Django was burning up. His recuperation would be long and arduous. No one thought he would ever dazzle the crowds again, but Django Reinhardt was determined to make his useless hand make music again.This rhythmically related tale was beautifully executed and the bold, vibrant artwork complimented it very nicely. The story seemed to swirl and somehow had an ethereal quality about it. The storyline captured my imagination and I went to listen to clips of Django's amazing guitar work in Amazon's music section. If you are a jazz afficionado, you will probably enjoy this light, but beautiful biography about his life!

Django Reinhardt, one of the world's greatest jazz guitarists, started under extremely humble auspices that held few forebodings of his future prominence. Born into a Roma family with very little money and no permanent home, Django did not go to school and he worked hard to help his family meet their needs. Music and dancing around the campfire helped to ease the difficulties, and Django grew up to earn a living from playing a banjo. Even though a terrible accident left him with severe burns and partial paralysis in his left hand, Django found the willingness and inspiration to rehabilitate his hand and become an even better musician.This interesting book shines the spotlight on an important jazz musician who children otherwise may not know much about. Closely woven into the story are some clear lessons in economics related to poverty, jobs, and human resources. The bold illustrations and author notes further contribute to the book's high marks on substantive content.

Funny thing, being human. I think The Tortilla Curtain is a book that can make you think. I enjoyed it. I was just in L.A. and passed through the areas written about in this book so I found the story very interesting and engaging. If you tend to not understand irony, or only take a book at face value, you might not like this book-it can be depressing. If you enjoy irony and find people amazingly dumb at times and recognize the futility of things at times, you might like this book. I read reviews regarding this story where people didn't like any of the characters. I did. I could see people I know and stories I have heard about people in the pages and descriptions of this book, I just found it to be thick with irony, almost funny, but not quite. It's more serious than funny.It's a hard book to describe, though I would recommend spending a few hours with it. The main characters are a Mexican couple, in L.A. illegally, trying to scrape by and maybe someday buy a nice house and have good jobs, but they rarely get a break. There is also a white, upper middle class family that lives in Topanga Canyon who moved there to enjoy the country and the mountains. The husband, Delaney, is a nature writer and his wife, Krya, a realtor. While the Mexicans barely scrape by and live camped along side a waterway, the white couple become concerned with growing crime and the coyotes and other creatures that live in the area. The homeowners assoc. wants to put in a wall to keep out intruders and wild creatures. The liberal nature writer is against the wall and also believes that everyone deserves a chance in this world, no matter who. Except, he has a growing hatred for a Mexican that he accidentally hit with his car. He begins to really hate that guy...It's a fine line in humanity between making it and just having a meal to keep you going. It's also amazing how some people live, rich or poor. It's all life and that's what this book is about. There are no great answers to any problems here. This book is just an examination, albeit, exaggerated, but a story about our civilization and times, and I believe it can make one think and appreciate small luxuries and maybe make one ponder the bigger issues.This is my first T.C. Doyle book and I'll have to check out his other work. I read this book in a few hours and I thought it was very well done.

I really donâ€™t know where to begin. This is a life-changing book â€“ a story that will put you in the shoes of people we see everyday â€“ but donâ€™t really see. The book follows two parallel stories â€“ one of a poor, illegal immigrant couple who have landed in Southern California in desperate search for a better life. The other is that of a comfortable, white couple thriving in the suburbs. What is most interesting as these stories unfold is the disparity between what each couple worries about and struggle with on a daily basis.For the immigrant couple the daily worry is in finding safe shelter, food, employment; security of any kind and survival on the most basic level. The suburban couple worries about getting a bigger commission, what material to use for their kitchen counters, saving the environment and where they should eat out for dinner â€“ the pressures do not revolve around survival, but rather around maintaining â€“ and expanding â€“ their level of comfort and luxury.This is a tale of our times.The story is not told in a manner that condemns the suburbanites â€“ but, instead, demonstrates that this is who they are, how they have been raised culturally â€“ they are a product of our mad dash to the security of a white-picket fence in the suburbs â€“ the result of isolation, cut off from the real suffering of others, making these things seem less real, less human.One must ask â€“ why do we worry more about stray animals and trees than the suffering of people in our own nations and around the world? Is it because we have cut ourselves off from their need â€“ because it is too painful to witness and we feel too helpless in changing their circumstances? Or are we so safe in our hermetically sealed communities that we forget that others are not doing so well.Immigration is not a new challenge to our nation. We have never, truly done a good job of assimilating new arrivals â€“ they have often been discriminated against and discouraged by any means from thriving. We all fear, this is not new, that our nation cannot possibly hold another soul â€“ or that this new group will work for less and take our jobs. The irony is, that our jobs are being sent overseas â€“ much of the work done by immigrants is work we feel is beneath us â€“ menial. Â But, honestly, that is neither here nor there.Our failure, on so many levels, is in not recognizing every one of these people as just that â€“ people. They are fathers, mothers, sisters and brothers â€“ doing everything they can to survive. Many of us, if we go back a couple generations, have a plumber, farmer, factory worker or mechanic in our family tree. Go back a couple more and new probably have some newly arrived immigrants â€“ lost in a new world trying to make a better life.Do we know where we come from? Do we know what our ancestors experienced â€“ the discrimination and struggle â€“ that has resulted in our comfortable lives? They wanted a better life â€“ the question is â€“ do we know when we have arrived (gotten what we came for), or is it always a pursuit for more?Reading this book made me uncomfortable. It made me feel ashamed for the dissatisfaction I have felt for my car, my TV or my cell phone â€“ I realized how much I have to be grateful for and that my comfort should be utilized to help others â€“ not create ever more luxurious comforts.The Tortilla Curtain reminded me a great deal of Almanac of the Dead by Leslie Marmon Silko,Â Â Fast Food Nation by Eric Schlosser, Food, IncÂ and Lone Star, allÂ of which do a tremendous job of portraying the plight of Mexican Immigrants as they struggle to enter our country and earn a living. I don't know that I am an advocate for illegal immigration, but I certainly feel for them in their struggle. This is a great challenge - one that our nation needs to face sooner rather than later.

This review was written at the desk of a salaried office job, where I am paid $65,000/yr to do virtually nothing important, so I mostly sit in my chair and listen to podcasts and audiobooks all day. I do this until enough executives and managers above me are gone that I can feel comfortable sneaking out. With my income from this sit, I then outsource all my chores to a slew of below living wage 21st Century gig economy employees--Uber drivers, food delivery, meal kits, laundry.Having been one of these low paid wage laborers several years ago, it seems like a cruel joke. The higher paying job I find, the less I actually have to work. The higher ranking the position, the less the job is about doing things and contributing to society.Is this a blessing or immoral sin? Yes. But it turns out, I'm not alone.This is an entertaining book of anecdotes and statistics on what turns out to be a common phenomena. It is one of the most refreshing reads that a college-educated conscious working professional can have in their library. Put down every other garbage business book that supposedly empowers you. You don't need to practice mindfulness, or rules for life, or launch a lean startup. Breathe in and breathe out, your job is unnecessary and so are most of the other jobs!Admitting this is the first step of us all solving the collective problem.

John Maynard Keynes had great confidence that capitalism will improve not only the wealth but also the well-being of all in society. One of the specific predictions he made that, sadly, did not come true, was that by the end of the twentieth century, the major Western societies would have achieved the fifteen-hour work week because technology would have alleviated hitherto long menial hours. Why has that not happened and instead employees are working longer and longer hours? Graeber blames the creation of what he calls â€˜BS jobsâ€™ (I had to shortened the word to pass Amazon censorship rules) and the â€˜BSizationâ€™ of proper jobs. Graeberâ€™s defines a BS job as â€˜a form of paid employment that is so completely pointless, unnecessary, or pernicious that even the employee cannot justify its existence even though, as part of the conditions of employment, the employee feels obliged to pretend that this is not the caseâ€™. He also says that â€˜Hell is a collection of individuals who are spending the bulk of their time working on a task they donâ€™t like and are not particularly good atâ€™. He provides plenty of examples, cabinetmakers compelled to fry fish is one of them. There is the story of a corporate lawyer who went on to become a happy singer in an indie rock band when he became disillusioned with his job as a corporate lawyer. He had taken â€˜the default choice of many directionless folk: law schoolâ€™ but has found his job as a lawyer to be â€˜utterly meaningless, contributed nothing to the world, and, in his own estimation, should not really existâ€™. Some such BS jobs are so pointless that no one notices even if the employee vanishes. One case involved a Spanish civil servant who skipped work for six years to study philosophy and became an expert in Spinoza before he was found out. In another case, an employee had been sitting at his desk, dead for four days before his colleagues realised that he had died. BS jobs can also be defined by the scope of work. People who are employed in jobs that exist primarily to make someone else look or feel important are known as â€˜flunkiesâ€™. Doormen are examples in this category. There are also â€˜goonsâ€™ who exist only because people employ them â€“ soldiers, for example; and â€˜duct-tapersâ€™ who are employed to help one part of an organisation communicate with another in the same organisation. In addition to financial consultancy, middle management is where one might find BS jobs aplenty. A sign that you have a job like this is when you are designated to provide â€˜strategic leadershipâ€™. This is what Graeber has to say in middle management in academia:â€˜Now, those of us toiling in the academic mills who still like to think of ourselves as teachers and scholars before all else have come to fear the word â€œstrategicâ€. â€œStrategic statementâ€ (or even worse, â€œstrategic vision documentsâ€) instil a particular terror, since these are the primary means by which corporate management techniques â€“ setting up quantifiable methods for assessing performance, forcing teachers and scholars to spend more and more of their time assessing and justifying what they do and less and less time actually doing it â€“ are insinuated into academic lifeâ€™. Graeber interviewed employees from various sectors. From one he quoted, â€˜in banking, obviously the entire sector adds no value and is therefore BSâ€™. Then there is the Human Resources Department that sets up intranet and instruct employees to make it â€˜into a kind of internal â€œcommunityâ€, like Facebook. They set it up; nobody uses it. So they then started to try and bully everyone into using itâ€¦Then they tried to entice people in by having HR post a load of touchy-feely crap or people writing â€œinternal blogsâ€ that nobody cared about.â€™ Graeber argues that the rise of such jobs was not due to economic factors but political and moral ones. He discusses how jobs can truly have value, and how exactly can value be measured. What is clear that we must resist â€˜The pressure to value ourselves and others on the basis of how hard we work at something weâ€™d rather not be doingâ€¦if youâ€™re not destroying your mind and body via paid work youâ€™re not living rightâ€™. The last part of the book is devoted to answering the question, â€˜How have so many humans reached the point where they accept that even miserable, unnecessary work is actually superior to no work at all?â€™ From there Graeber discusses the modern culture of managerial feudalism and the resentment it generates, yet is itself oblivious to it. If Graeber is right that this is not an economic problem but a political and moral one, then the solution cannot be economic either. Unfortunately, Graeber is loath to make policy recommendations. That keeps us then, in utter suspense â€“ unless workers revolt.

I love how an obscure magazine asked an internationally recognized scholar to submit what he believed no one else would publish -- and how that essay went instantly viral and eventually became what may be the author's top bestseller.I work in real estate. I'm of the opinion that realtors serve a useful purpose in our society, but only because of how the property laws are written. This book, along with Debt: The First 5000 Years, convinces me that within the constraints of US property law, which are outdated and unnatural, all real estate professionals exist as "duct tapers" (BS job #3) -- performing a job that only needs to get done because the system is set up in a flawed way that requires it. My proof: what other societies need realtors? The ones where American property laws are forced on people. (I recognize that American property law stems from English common law which depended on Roman legal systems.)This book is brilliant. It may literally save hundreds if not thousands of lives from suicide and other forms of self-destruction, especially if employers take much of its message to heart, implementing remedies along the way. I know I will keep several copies on the shelf at work, sharing them with anyone who expresses interest. I can only hope this book fuels a revolution against all kinds of wage labor, and that the dignity of work can be taken back from the people who use work just as a means to further their own exploitative, unexamined, or sadistic ends.

The original essay upon which this is based really said it all, and the book seems like an unnecessary and somewhat forced elaboration. I don't recommend it.

This seems to be a book by a man who had one original opinion five years ago and felt it worthwhile to spend 300 pages describing the opinion itself, as opposed to conducting or presenting research to support it.This book could have been 50 pages and contained the same amount of signal. The author states his opinions and then quotes comments from people on the Internet as "proof" that a majority of work is unnecessary, that capitalism has failed, that it is all part of a grand conspiracy etc etc.Save yourself some time and just read the original opinion article this guy wrote in 2013. This book adds no new information to that.

This is one of those books that will change your outlook on life for the rest of your days and you'll be happy you did it. Let the revolution begin!
