Gr 3–5—Becker reconstructs the story of Irwin "Ike" Hoover's work with the Edison General Electric company to bring electricity to the White House in 1891 during the presidency of Benjamin Harrison. While several children's books dealing with the White House history include information about the innovation of electricity, this title draws from Hoover's autobiography My 42 Years in the White House, among other sources, to depict his experience wiring and hanging electric lights in the president's house. Though certain characters and details are fictionalized, this book leaves readers with a solid impression of life in the late 19th century. The illustrations are reminiscent of classical art and reinforce the text by underpinning the opulence of the White House for the time period. Hummel also makes good use of chiaroscuro to juxtapose light and dark tones in parallel with the advent of electric lights. Great story about a big change in the White House
What a beautiful picture book. Love the illustrations. The story is one we should all know about ‘our’ White House, but I’ve never heard this story before. Imagine the undertaking to switch the White House from gas lamps to electric lights. And Ike Hoover was only 19 years-old! Very well done. Should be in every school library. I hope there is a curriculum guide in the works.
In 1891, a young man nicknamed “Ike,†showed up at The White House. His job was to install wiring for a new Thomas Edison invention - electricity - and to help President Benjamin Harrison and his extended family (four Marys!) feel comfortable with the new technology. Ike went on to work for every President for the next forty years. Beautifully illustrated by Benjamin Hummel, it reveals a time in our nation’s history that is often overlooked.
