Like some other readers who've posted reviews of Robert Dugoni's books, I found him almost accidentally: Amazon offered the first of his Tracy Crosswhite series for free, and I was immediately hooked: I finished all of those (and pre-ordered the next one, due this September), then turned to the David Sloane books. I've now finished all of those, damn it. I spent 30 years lawyering, and I suppose that's part of the appeal of this series: Dugoni does a fine job accurately depicting the atmosphere of court rooms, good, and bad, judges, prosecutors and lawyers. But really, the true appeal here is his accurately depicting our human condition. I've lost a child, I've had troubled relationships with my children, all healed over time, thank God, and in general, I've experienced much of what Dugoni puts his characters through, and, just like his courtroom sketches, he nails it all.Your results may differ of course, but for me, I find these books to provide gripping plot lines, excellent writing, and a chance to emotionally connect with his characters, and even a few new perspectives that provide solace over some of the losses I've experienced over the decades. These are wise books, and they're fun as hell to read.

When I read a thriller, I'm looking for several things. I hope the lead will grab me. I count on the author's ability to build tension and suspense steadily throughout the book. I look for settings and circumstances that engage my curiosity. And I expect the characters to bear a reasonable resemblance to credible human beings. Robert Dugoni's novel The Jury Master gets almost all of this right. But it comes up short in one crucial respect: the story's conclusion is simply not believable. This is a thriller that thrills but falls flat in the end.As of 2018, Robert Dugoni has published 18 books beginning in 2004. The Jury Master is the first entry of five novels to date in his David Sloane series. Sloane, the protagonist, is a trial attorney specializing in wrongful death defense in San Francisco as the novel opens. Dugoni himself practiced law in the courtrooms of the same city for 13 years. When The Jury Master concludes, Sloane has moved to Seattle, where Dugoni now makes his home.The story in this novel involves several intertwining threads and a half-dozen principal characters. To say that it's complicated is an understatement. Dugoni does a fine job building suspense, and he manages to leave the resolution of the tale to the book's final chapters. In fact, the resolution is what some readers might call "shattering." I found it questionable. This is, indeed, a thriller that thrills only until the end.If you read this book, be prepared to encounter an unnaturally gifted trial lawyer, a super-secret US military death squad, a right-wing Mexican revolutionary leader, and a White House Chief of Staff who is a heartless killer. In other words, I should have seen the ending coming.

Really intriguing. I was a bit hesitant as I prefer more of an investigation, rather than trial lawyer novel, but with David Sloane's character and his past, and then a persistent detective (nicknamed Mole) and even a reclusive CIA operative, which comes into the mix - It was well packed with mystery and action!I had first read My Sister's Grave (by R.Dugoni), and as Tracey CrossWhite is a Detective, I thought I would much prefer that book / her character over the David Sloane character. And while I am eager for the 2nd in the CrossWhite series out in Sept, I will read through the books of Robert DuGoni's - David Sloane character! I was impressed.

The author has created a compelling protagonist with David Sloane, and I enjoyed this book. The writing was good and the story moved along at a nice pace.What I didn't like was that the author would move back and forth between scenes too often and too abruptly. The reader would just be getting into one scene, and all of a sudden we would have to adjust our thinking. I think Dugoni did this to create a sense of ending each chapter with a cliffhanger, but he didn't pull it off. It was disruptive rather than effective. He would also start each new chapter out of nowhere, and so the reader would be lost as to time and place and who for about a paragraph. Not sure what Dugoni was trying to accomplish with this technique, but it was a fail.Even so, I would probably try this author again if he wrote true courtroom dramas. THE JURY MASTER, despite its title, was not--and, therefore, was a disappointment to this reader. This book was an espionage thriller, with little to no time spent in the courtroom or dealing with legal matters. If you like that kind of book, you'll enjoy this, but anyone expecting to delve into a courtroom drama will feel as led astray as I was.

I enjoyed meeting David Sloan. I have to confess: I've read these books out of order so I already had a familiarity with him. But the later books did not strike me as entirely well rounded as the first. Dugoni tends to suck me in and I have a hard time putting his books down. He is the type of author I can definitely binge read.

I don't know why I had not heard of this author before now. I was recommended to another of his books with Kindle unlimited and now I'm hooked! I started at the beginning with this one and now on the fourth in the series.Great stories and people you can care about. He also has a unique way of describing things that I really enjoy.

This book takes you from the east coast to the west coast, introducing new characters who seem to have no connection. However, each connection is a compelling story which keeps you reading. Literally all the loose ends don't come together until the end although they do start to merge which, again, keeps you reading. I only gave it four stars instead of five because of the difficulty in keeping the characters straight and yet this writing style is also what keeps you reading. I have only just discovered this writer and I will be reading more of his books.

Into The Magic Shop is an easy read and fairly interesting one. It's motive however, has some basis in meditation and some in the law of attraction. I wasn't quite expecting this when I picked it up. I am so interested in the plasticity in the brain and it's lightly covered here. Our brain's ability to rechart and grow is really a cool concept. Old pathways can become obsolete if we focus on new routes of thought. Fascinating stuff for this reader, but there isn't quite enough of that in this book. For a person unfamiliar with meditation and focus, this is a great book. If you are not new to such ideas, this may be a rehashing of familiar stomping grounds.I like the instructional pages of this book, covering relaxation technique, focus, and meditation. For me though, it was a retelling of ideas that I am familiar with and though easy to read and intriguing, I didn't really learn much new stuff in these pages.You can change your brain and your heart-if you are new to this, read this book-it lays a great foundation. Cultivating compassion should be more popular in this society which is filled up with millions of 'mes.' In this book are great thoughts on the like. This is a simple book that has some good, and big ideas. I am just familiar with the content and have read a few books on the subject so nothing was really new here.

Back in the 1970's, I took a meditation course with a well-known Hindu teacher named Swami Rama, who was one of the first yogis whose significant mental powers were studied by Western scientists. What I learned from him about the tools of relaxation, meditation, focusing on a mantra were very effective in my life. But like so many others, my best intentions were waylaid by daily living, and after a few years I stopped meditating. This was to my detriment since the constant stress of working, raising a family and trying to keep my head above water financially created havoc with my health.In the meantime, Swami Rama became a controversial character after being accused by several women of being sexually abused and exploited by the "holy man" in his Ashram. This kind of revelation has become almost common place as we've come to understand that great teachers can all-too-often possess a great ability to take advantage of those he or she teaches and who place so much trust and love in that person.Today, "mindfulness" is almost a buzzword in everything from sports to business as meditation has been studied and proven to be beneficial and rewarding to those who practice it.As I read through the first few chapters of "Into the Magic Shop", I felt a definite deja vu as Dr. Doty describes the "magic" he was taught by Ruth in the magic shop of his youth. I purchased the book because the blurb about Dr. Doty seemed intriguing, but I soon felt like the book was nothing more than a self-help book disguised as an autobiography, and while I understood that the magic described in the book is indeed powerful, I already knew all about what he was describing as the "magic" and was about to put the book aside; disappointed that the book never felt like it was going anywhere.I'm very glad that I didn't, however, since once Dr. Doty began to relate the amazing journey he took from Lancaster, California to the pinnacle of financial and professional success, the book became one I couldn't put down. The remarkable arc of his journey becomes a life lesson for so many people hell bent on success at all costs.Dr. Doty is frank about his failings in relationships and about how the magic he learned got him everything he wanted materially, but let him bankrupt in many other ways. It was only when he began to understand that only through Kindness, Compassion, Empathy and Love does a life truly become fulfilled that he understood how he had misused the magic he'd learned.In our society, the words above are used often, but they are not taken to heart, which is the organ Dr. Doty believes be the true seat of our greatest human virtues; not the brain.Dr. Doty's story of how the magic he learned as a child can be used toward good or ill is a vitally important one in a society that values material wealth, fame and irresponsible consumerism as the most desirable. Not one to just talk about Kindness, Compassion, Empathy and Love, he created the Center for Compassion and Altruism Research and Education at Stanford University. It is an ambitious goal, but one that more and more people feel dedicated to achieving; especially in a world where hatred, injustice and intolerance seem to predominate in our media and in our politics.

This book is an interesting one that I read in one night. It is both a memoir and a metaphysical book, and is written by a neurosurgeon. The introduction has a graphic description of brain surgery which I stopped reading long before it was over. Chapter One then goes back to Lancaster, California in 1968, where the author is a twelve-year-old who feels like he is most unlucky where his family is concerned. His father is an alcoholic with unsteady employment, his mother is depressed and sometimes suicidal, his older brother is always frightened, and eviction is always a possibility. But then he walks into a magic shop one day, where Ruth, the owner’s mother, decides he would be a good candidate to teach the “magic” of metaphysics.What she basically teaches him is meditation and visualization. Those are two topics I’ve read much about, since I’ve read hundreds of metaphysical books, but have never been truly enticed to practice. No, I’m not going to add "until now". Although if you are interested in those two things and don’t won’t to get bogged down in "heavy" reading, this book would be an excellent one to read. What you will learn is “relaxing the body”, “taming the mind”, “opening the heart” and “clarifying your intent”. There are step-by-step instructions, of two to three pages, about each of those techniques after they are discussed. There are also audio versions of those instructions at a website mentioned in the book. Thus, this is a bit of a self-help book, too.Dr. Doty describes how his childhood is tremendously changed after spending six weeks learning Ruth’s lessons. His family life doesn’t really change, he is the one who changes. Sometimes while reading this book, it seems unreal a 12-year-old American boy in 1968 would have the patience and desire to learn those lessons, but I will believe that the good doctor is telling the truth. He then goes on to describe the rest of his life, where he beat all odds to go to college and medical school, and became a very successful and wealthy neurosurgeon. With success came arrogance, however, and there were some disastrous happenings. But once Dr. Doty realized he was listening too much to his brain and not enough to his heart, he balanced out his life and began teaching compassion and altruism. Like the Dalai Lama, he says kindness is his religion. The author has certainly come a long way from his days as an angry, envious child, who was afraid his life would always be defined by his unhappy, poor family and circumstances beyond his control. A good read.

Runner was written in a thought-provoking way that not only had Chance battling with his own emotions, but me with my own as well. Carl Deuker presented many instances in which I had to grapple with taking the easy way out or strive to continue with the bare minimum. This book confronted and covered many topics such as drugs, terrorism, and trafficking. I suggest this book for teens twelve and up as it does take into consideration some more mature worldly topics.I think one reason that I enjoyed this book so much, was that I could relate. I can't say that I'm at rock bottom living in a household where the bills aren't being paid and everyday expenses aren't being met, but there were some aspects of Runner that I could really connect to. For example, as the title of the book depicts, Chance runs. Every day he runs, and that is what got him started in this business in the first place. I love to run as well. I was able to relate to how Chance felt as he went on his daily runs and let the day's troubles just seep from his mind. Running was calming for him, as it is for me too. It would have been nice to see Chance's running scenes go into more detail, but maybe that's just the inner runner inside me speaking.I also enjoyed how Runner presented a very real and plausible situation. This book focused on topics like terrorism, drugs, and trafficking. Not only did this book make me think about these topics, but it also shed some light on them. What happened to Chance could be what is happening to a teen somewhere right now. They have nowhere else to go, but suddenly this opportunity comes out of nowhere to essentially make everything "better." Kids are sucked into this kind of world all the time, and it's something that people should be aware of. Runner definitely spread the message.It was interesting to see how the story initially took place in a small town on the coast of Washington, to see it grow in size to have an affect on the whole world. That was also something that prompted Chance to grow as he understood what a large scale this was really on. This had started out as a job to earn some money, and progressed to an event who's outcome could affect millions of lives. Chance really went through some self-discovery as he battled with this, and his own problems at family and school.This is a very fast-paced read, and at times that was a good thing, but in the long run (haha, no pun intended), I wish Runner had been a bit longer. It would have been nice to have gotten to know Chance and the other characters on a deeper level. Instead of relating to the characters, I felt like I was just watching from afar. I'm, glad this was a stand-alone novel though, because I can't really imagine the story being drawn out to the length of two books. I can't wait to read more of Carl Deuker's sport novels that also confront the issues of teens!Overall, Runner was an action-packed read with real issues that any teen can relate to. It held my interest...but. The plot line was good....however I had problems with the "envelope". At one point I actually had to check previous pages to verify that the author actually wanted us to believe the main character was a teenager. Maybe I was reading a book for young adults and didn't know it. But I gave it 3 stars because it was well written

I haven't read this, it was purchased for my son for required school reading. I have been amazed! My son usually hates reading and I have to assign him a certain amount to finish each day- this time he reads past the required amount and is telling his friends about the story! I consider that a success! Wonderful!

My 11 year old is an "old soul". He enjoyed this story, as he does all of Carl Deuker's novels. They are perfect for pre-adolescents / teens!If the story is babyish, my son won't read it. The Runner and Payback Time are not babyish at all, yet they stay within the boundries of appropriateness that I want for my son.

Great deal

This book was for a school project. My child who doesn't like sports liked this book.
