I miss Robert B Parker and have been impressed with Coleman’s continuation of the Jesse Stone series. I enjoy his dry wit like Parker’s, his details about The NE like Parker’s of Boston, and wanted to give his Moe series a read. Love reading about NYC and NY state, especially since I’m a liberal heart born and bred in the midwest and will never get to live back east! Katy made the same choice I did, and although my kids grew up with struggles, some of which i had not anticipated, they built character and compassion that make me very proud and I’m sure Sarah will too. Hey Moe, I’m starting book 3 and pulling for you and your family! I love the wrap ups and writer’s comments! Thank you, RF Coleman!!

I've just finished this novel and I have mixed feelings about it. It's very slow in the first half and then tumbles downhill like a rolling stone pushed over a cliff. It reminds me of my second novel in this respect and I suspect got similar reviews. But I also understand the authors love of this work because it says why the author is writing these stories. I appreciate that.I did find the back and forth to family cumbersome, contributing to the jerkiness of the first half. And the deal of the secret about what happened to his wife's brother confusing since it was revealed in Walking the Square. The exploration of his Jewishness did explore Mose's soul searching, and revealed his character in a way that built Him better for future adventures.I love PI novels. And it's so hard to find really good ones. This author has a unique love of the art of PI-ness. I know what that is because I've been one and written them. And I'm an avid student of this uniquely honorable exploration of the battle between good and evil that is so real in the world.Bottom line: I liked it and appreciate it for more than just a story.

A reader usually knows when a book is just okay when s/he ceases caring how the story ends as long as it ends.I grew tired before the mid-point with Coleman's reflections on Jewish culture and his protagonist's struggle with his ethnic and religious background. It's a cold case kind of detective procedural but not one that is terribly gripping. The protagonist is tiresome in his repeating mishaps and also in his ruminations about how much he loves and misses his wife and infant daughter. It felt to me like this was mostly fill to turn a thin plot into a 200+ page novel. Given the emphasis that Coleman puts on the Jewish experience I have a hunch that I won't be seeking out his other novels, especially those that deal with this protagonist, Moe Prager. I'd say the same if an author was so taken with an Irish, Latino, or African-American experience. I don't read detective fiction so I can learn about other cultures, religions, etc. For this kind of awareness and information I go directly to nonfiction.

I've read the first three Moe Prager books and like this one the best. It has a real feeling of the Catskills with indelible characters who are hiding the details of a decades-old fatal fire at a resort dormitory for summer workers. Why? Moe investigates and self-castigates while staying at a resort that has seen better days and is run by a real character who worked as a comic in the Borscht Belt heyday.

When I read the first Moe Praeger mystery I went on and read all of them without stopping to read anything else. They are not the greatest stories in the world (except The Hurt Machine, which is very, very good) but they keep your interest and keep you reading. What's more they keep you interested in the main character, who becomes a real person to you. He even makes mistakes and goes off on wrong trails, and is very believable.I'm sorry to tell you this one is the poorest of the series, and really the only poor one. Even the best of authors have slips at times.

I agree with a previous reviewer- - how are these books not more popular? I stumbled upon this series accidentally, and I am so glad I did. I could not locate the first book in the series, so I started with the second, Redemption Street, and I was immediately hooked.Growing up in Brooklyn, I share a lot of common ground with Moe Prager, which makes these books really fun to read. Even if this were not the case, I would enjoy the many plot twists that Reed Farrel Coleman has woven into his stories.A great read for anyone interested in the private eye/mystery genre. Make sure to read the books in order!

Started the Moe Prager series looking for a new series of mysteries/thrillers to get into. About to finish #4. Coleman is a very, very good writer and his descriptions of Brooklyn (where the series is set) are wonderful. In a way, kind of gets me thinking of a Brooklyn James Lee Burke. Excellent characters, well developed and Moe actually has a flaw or two. Inventive plots. Am totally enjoying Coleman's work.

I just recently started reading the Moe Prager series (in order) and am delighted with the depth and emotion that Mr. Coleman conveys in his writing. I also like the fact that the cases that he writes about are plausible.I will warn you that there is some character development that takes place in this book that I think will be necessary for the subsequent books (which might make the story seem to lag a bit at times if viewed as a stand-alone book). I would also recommend reading 'Walking the Perfect Square' first to understand the groundwork for some of the family dynamics.Overall, I found the book to be enjoyable and interesting and would highly recommend it.
