Review

""This engaging debut from Jordan tells the love story of two college students who pursue their romance as World War I begins.""Jordan does a terrific job of contrasting the superficial formalities of the initial chapters depicting New England social life with the grueling realities of life in the trenches. Also on display is her knack for taking what at first seem like throwaway or background details and making them central to the story's last third..."" - Publishers Weekly"A thoughtful look at a turning point in world history. Helen is a sympathetic and complicated main character. Her strengths and weaknesses keep the reader's attention, making this a worthwhile read. " - Kirkus"A thoughtful work that offers an interesting perspective on the period." - Booklist"Reminiscent of Jacqueline Winspear's Maise Dobbs books without the mystery, this novel explores the complications involved when war becomes personal. Jordan builds empathetic characters and an intriguing story. " - Library Journal"Allegra Jordan's The End of Innocence is a moving ode to a lost generation. With lyrical prose and rich historical detail, Jordan weaves a tale in which love overcomes fear, hope overcomes despair, and the indelible human spirit rises up to embrace renewal and reconciliation in the face of loss and destruction." - Allison Pataki, New York Times bestselling author of The Traitor's Wife"Love in a time of war....surely there is no more compelling or romantic theme in all of literature Yet this fine debut novel appeals to the brain as well as the heart. Allegra Jordan brings us historical fiction at its best." - Lee Smith, New York Times bestselling author of Guests on Earth and The Last Girls"A delicious, well-crafted historical novel." - Daniel Klein, NYT best-selling co-author of PLATO and A PLATYPUS WALKS INTO A BAR"Downton Abbey has found a brilliant successor in this spellbinding tale of love, death, and war. The finest war fiction to be published in many years." - Jonathan W. Jordan, bestselling author of Brothers, Rivals, Victors"An exquisitely beautiful novel." - William Ferris, UNC-Chapel Hill professor and former chair of the National Endowment for the Humanities"A fresh imagination about divided loyalties, justice, and love." - Debora Spar, Barnard College President

This was like 3 different stories in one. I really enjoyed the first part, taking place around Harvard in 1914 involving a bit of a love triangle between a pair of cousins, one German the other English and a young Radcliffe student from an old Boston family. There was a bit of mystery and many outside complications making this part of the story quite fun. Part two takes place in Europe when the cousins have both returned to their countries of origin to fight in the war. I had little interest in the geography listed and battles. But the story of the cousins picks up and the story became interesting again. Part 3 of the story is back in Boston after the war. I thought it was a very bad ending for a great start. It was just not satisfying. But that said, I did enjoy reading the book. The time was well spent, just wish the author had written a better ending. I got this book for $1.99 on sale and it was sure worth that.

I recently attended a lecture given by the author. She mentioned a particular theme that although I thought was covered, didn't appear to me to be as much of a focus as she discussed in her lecture. I found that to be very interesting and something I had no doubt overlooked to a large degree. I mention this only to alert the reader to "look" for more subtle issues than the obvious ones of love, honor, friendship, and duty. How a community deals with and heals from trauma, was far less obvious to me, but I now think equally if not more important. Please note I do not fault the author but rather my own lack of insight for this oversight.

This book drove me crazy at times and diverted me from the story line. But I stayed with it, and am glad for it. There is a definite need for a better editor, grammatical, traditional and for consistency. The writing style is inconsistent, and certain words are used ad nauseum, like 'brightened'. And the constant blushing was just annoying. But having said all that, there is real promise in this author; there are some passages that are pure genius. I will certainly look for her next book.

I really like this book and found it quite interesting and was once again reminded of the perils of war but through the eyes of the well developed characters. You realize how caught up we all can become in what really isn't important and how war can so destroy the views and lives of our young people who don't fully realize why they are even fighting in the first place. This could have been written during any time in history and still holds true today

One of the most beautiful and moving stories I have read in a long time. Even more so because it is based somewhat on fact. With the approach of WWI, students at Harvard do loose their innocence and without giving too much of the story away, perhaps the most moving part is the love that two cousins share for one another even while fighting on opposites sides in the war.

This is a great novel bu a great writer. The feeling and the characters were wonderful. I had a few cries - but I won't tell where. This is a must for historians and English classes.

Bought this to read for Book Club. It was a great read.

Amazingly well written story of WWI struggle with several issues; women's involvement in politics, prejudice toward an innocent German student at Harvard, how to honor students involved in the war, and dealing with conflicting feelings.
