About the Author
Artist and designer Simon Basher has fun playing in the world of contemporary character design. Inspired by a love of simple line work and a rich color palette, his characters fill the gap between edgy Manga and the cuteness of Hello Kitty! Dan Green has written many of the titles in the Basher Science series. He studied Geology at Cambridge University. Dr Mark Lythgoe is Director for the Centre for Advanced Biomedical Imaging at University College London, where he develops imaging techniques for investigating brain and cardiac function. He is also Director of the Cheltenham Science Festival in the UK and, in 2005, received a Biosciences Federation Communication Award for his outstanding contribution to science communication. Mark combines science and art to engage with the public and increase interaction between these fields. He has produced many sci/art projects and presented several documentary programs for television and radio

Extreme Physics is half the length of the regular Physics book and has some character overlap, which is a little disappointing, but the original characters are spot on. It takes a huge leap in explaining things like quantum mechanics and Schrödinger's Cat and more importantly why we might want to think about these things. In a STEM (or STEAM) world it's more and more important to get kids to the edge of science and then see what they can run with, this makes the introduction fun and inspiring, love having this book in our collection(even if it is quite a bit shorter than I would like!).
My kids really like this series, though I'm not exactly sure why - the illustrations seem just OK and the content takes difficult concepts and tries to make it easy for kids, but it ends up confusing and I don't think they really end up understanding what the book is trying to explain sometimes. But that might be more because of the difficult concepts. I think if they stuck with easier science concepts it would be more effective but again - my 7-year-olds like them!This one is a little funkier than the others though - for example, a "face transplant" is kind of interesting but a little too wacky for me to feel like it's really educational.
My son is a voracious reader. We got him 7 of the Basher Science books for his 8th birthday in late March. He had finished them all by the end of April and has picked them back up again to reread. (2nd grade, reading at a U-level) He won't touch a fiction book unless forced, but if it is about science or technology he can't put it down. Just enough pictures to keep him from feeling intimidated by the text, perfect silliness level to keep him engaged, and more real science facts than he could absorb the first time through.
I love the basher science books for teaching my daughter. She is 4.5 and just able to get into them some. THIS one however would not be good for a younger child and may be beyond a preteen. I actually bought it for myself to better my understanding of quantum physics as a person untrained in non-mechanical sciences.
My 8 year old son loves this series. He has Chemistry and Physics and rereads chapters all the time. This book explains science in terms that most 3rd and 4th graders can understand and in a way that keeps their interest. I have also learned a fact or two. They are very good converstation starters. Who would have thought that I would be discussing Brownian Motion with my 3rd grader while I was making coffee one morning! Definitely High-Interest books.
An excellent resource for gaining conceptual understanding of the fundamentals of Physics. Do not expect example formulae and problem sets. This work is designed to stimulate interest and answer basic questions.
These Basher Science books are super great for a classroom library. I teach 4th graders, they love the half dozen or so of these books that we have. I do a little preview and the kids are hooked! Gotta love it when they don't realize they are even learning.

He was first introduced to the Basher Science series in 3rd grade--"Rocks and Minerals". Since then, we've purchased most of the series for our children's home library. Our younger children aren't yet ready to read them but our 9 year old LOVES the series and uses them as both resource and reading entertainment. The books make learning fun with clever characters and bright illustrations.
