Many revelations by and about Emile Francis.”--Stan Fischler, MSG Network hockey analyst and publisher of The Fischler Report“Although meant for Rangers fans, one doesn't have to be a Rangers fan to enjoy this book. We Did Everything But Win is great reading for all true hockey fans and those who love reading great sports history.”—Inside Hockey

This is the best hockey history book about the New York Rangers I have ever read. Finally, a key era of Rangers history is given to us not through the anti-Rangers prism of Stan Fischler and instead gives you a feel for what the era was like. I have been a Ranger fan all my life but I have never been able to latch into the Francis era because my first season was 1976-77, the year after it ended so for me Jean Ratelle and Brad Park were never Rangers to me, and Phil Esposito was always a Ranger! But George Grimm helps bridge the gap for someone like me and gave me an appreciation for it I never truly had before. (And maybe someday, we'll see a similar book about the frustrating era of the 79 Cup Final team and the Herb Brooks era that could have delivered the Cup sooner but for the Islanders juggernaut!)
As a hockey fan since 1965, I enjoyed recalling many of the events during the Emile Francis era along with events I forgot about or was unaware of.George, awesome job, but in the announcers' chapter, you forgot about Norm Jary who announced with Bob Wolfe on WOR-TV in 1965-66. Jary called Bobby Hull's 51st goal which shattered the 50-goal barrier, but later had a distinguished tenure as mayor of Guelph, Ontario. While The Cat and John Halligan were awesome in promoting the game, Jary taught me the rudiments of the game better than Elliott or Gordon! Many years ago, A Year on Ice by Eskenazi was one of the best hockey books I've ever read and many of these events were pointed out by you!Awesome work, George! You could be the next Stan Fischler!
The title says it all they didn't win but they came so close. If they beat Montreal in round one, they would lose to Boston, they beat Boston and they lose to Chicago or Philadelphia. I became a hockey fan during this period and eventually became a season ticket holder in 1975. George Grimm does a great job covering this period making this book a must read for NY Ranger fans.
A must read for those who grew up during the Emile Francis era. Important and little known facts about the Garden hierarchy and the Ranger players themselves was presented. I couldn't put the book down.
A lifelong Rangers fan and having lived through these years with the franchise it brought back so many memories although some of them were painful. Any Rangers fan from that era I believe will enjoy this book.
This book is for all Rangers fans who suffered through those years of the Rangers coming close to winning it all and falling short. As a die hard Rangers fan this book brought back memories of the great players and their coach Emile.I highly recommend any Rangers fans or hockey fans to read this book.
Awesome book!
Great stories for Rangers fans from that era.
