From School Library Journal

PreS-Gr 2—As they did in A Leaf Can Be…(2012) and Water Can Be… (2014), Salas and Dabija have teamed up for this third imaginative creation. Simple rhymes and verses relate various aspects of a rock, explaining how it can be used as "a hopscotch marker" or as a "fire sparker." Listeners meanwhile absorb delicious synonyms and adjectives for a rock that they may have originally thought of as an ordinary object. To help augment their imaginations and knowledge, there are appended pages where children can find a glossary, as well as learn additional facts, such as how rocks can be used to create harbors or how chickens swallow pebbles to help digest their food. Dabija uses traditional as well as digital techniques to illustrate with a bright, colorful palette that is appealing to children. Purchase for your rock hounds or where the earlier books in this series are popular.—Blair Christolon, Prince William Public Library System, Manassas, VA

"As they did in A Leaf Can Be…(2012) and Water Can Be… (2014), Salas and Dabija have teamed up for this third imaginative creation. Simple rhymes and verses relate various aspects of a rock, explaining how it can be used as 'a hopscotch marker' or as a 'fire sparker.' Listeners meanwhile absorb delicious synonyms and adjectives for a rock that they may have originally thought of as an ordinary object. Purchase for your rock hounds or where the earlier books in this series are popular." ―School Library Journal (Journal)"What can a rock be? 'Tall mountain / Park fountain / Dinosaur bone / Stepping-stone.' The ideas expressed in this picture book's pithy text are varied and wide-ranging. Each two-word phrase appears on its own page, accompanied by a luminous illustration. While some concepts will be obvious to children from the words alone, and others are made clear by the pictures, a few ('Fire sparker,' 'Crusty dome,' 'Food grinder') may need further explanation. The sometimes cryptic phrases create a natural guessing game, and an appended section offers a paragraph of text explaining each one. Moldovan illustrator Dabija contributes a series of dynamic full-page and double-page images created with traditional and digital media. Her compositions, color combinations, and use of light are particularly fine. Similar in concept to Salas and Dabija's previous picture books, A Leaf Can Be . . . (2012) and Water Can Be . . . (2014), this beautiful picture book makes an excellent classroom read-aloud, challenging children to puzzle out the ideas in the poetic phrases and to broaden their thinking about rocks." ―Booklist (Journal)"'A rock is a rock,' but it can be so much more. A series of short rhyming couplets and digitally collaged illustrations celebrates the idea of rocks. Following the pattern of earlier titles on leaves and water, Salas and Dabija explore the many natural forms in which rock can be found―from the crust of the Earth to the moon's surface, from sand dunes and molten lava to cliffs filled with birds and fossilized bones―and demonstrate many of its uses. There's the play of skipping stones, the art of gargoyles, the utility of a bridge or breakwater, and the practicality of sparking fires and propping up books in a case. The author's two-word images ('Food grinder / Path winder') are each set on a single page and clearly illustrated in spreads that connect ideas that are sometimes quite disparate through color echoes and occasional repeated details. There is a hint of seasonal organization, and the book ends with the harvest and wintry snow. The backmatter provides further explanation for these 22 images, including, for example, instructions for hopscotch and the origin of diamonds. The economy of language and breadth of imagination suggests a broad audience for this wide-ranging and inventive exploration." ―Kirkus Reviews (Journal)

This was perfect for me to read to my 5 year old daughter's Kindergarten class for Tale and a Treat. They had been studying rocks and gems so this was a great compliment to their curriculum. My treat was chocolate candy rocks. They were a hit! The book is beautifully illustrated and really educational for kids. Definitely makes them think about all the different places rocks come from and all their different uses. Really lovely. I wanted something different as I'm sure a lot of parents just bring a random book to read. This totally rocked it.

Just an adorable book to help the children in our STEM Club realize the importance of rocks, stones, pebbles and shells being used in our environment.

I gave this book to a graduating geologist and she loved it!

Our grandson (age 5) loves it.

Lovely rhythm to this book. The words are beautiful and apt at describing the creative thoughts. Nice bedtime book.

Hooray for another wonderful read-aloud in Laura Purdie Salas' award-winning "Can Be..." series with illustrator Violeta Dabija. I'm just sad that this will be the last in the series. For anyone who might think rocks are boring, they should think again. Once you read this book, you'll discover that rocks play all kinds of important roles in our world. Dinosaur bone or stepping stone, hopscotch marker or fire sparker... with rhyming couplets that are clever and vibrant, and illustrations that are rich and absorbing, children will be not only engaged, but captivated. What's more, at the back of each book is a kid-friendly informational guide that elaborates on each of the things rocks and water and leaves can be, as well as a glossary, and recommended further reading. A Rock Can Be... easily meets the same high standards set by the first two books in the series: A Leaf Can Be... and Water Can Be.... If you don't yet own copies of those, you should probably do yourself a favor and purchase all three!

We recently checked this book out from the library - I'm not sure who picked it out, because when it comes to my 4-year-old, it's a big hodge-podge of stuff she likes the covers of and things my husband or I intentionally seek out for her. However we got our hands on it, I'm glad we did!To be honest, I'm not sure if my kids are nearly as taken with the book as I am, but I have really enjoyed reading it to them a handful of times over the past two weeks. Essentially, the author takes a simple object -- a rock -- and shows how many diverse ways we see it around us, from the natural (lava!) to the man-made (stepping stones, stone fences for pastures). I might argue she left out "playground" with a picture of a rock climber, but I can let that one go :) The artwork throughout is beautiful and eye-catching, and the text is beautifully simple; it's easy enough to read to my toddler. At the end of the narrative, there are several pages over which the author explains each iteration of the rock throughout the book, which was wonderful to read/talk about with my 4-year-old. There's also a glossary of terms at the very end, and I'm working on convincing my almost-7-year-old that she would actually find the book interesting (she's skeptical of most anything she doesn't pick out herself). Also, I just discovered that this is part of a series! So now I'm excited to take a look at the author's other books, too :)5-stars, highly recommended!

This third book in the series (A LEAF CAN BE, WATER CAN BE) proves again how inventive Laura Purdie Salas' poetic mind can be. Each page of this delightful book opens our eyes to the beauty and possibility of the humble rock, which can be anything from a "lake skimmer" to a "building trimmer." Violet Dabija's art glows and sparkles with color, and she has created the cutest mountain goats I've ever seen! A perfect book for cuddling up with your favorite kiddo and marveling at the world's wonders . . . each page contains so much to talk about.
