Paul B. Janeczko (1945–2019) was a poet and teacher who edited numerous award-winning poetry anthologies for young people, including A Poke in the I, A Kick in the Head, A Foot in the Mouth, and The Death of the Hat, all of which were illustrated by Chris Raschka; Firefly July, illustrated by Melissa Sweet; and The Proper Way to Meet a Hedgehog and Other How-To Poems, illustrated by Richard Jones. He also wrote Worlds Afire; Requiem: Poems of the Terezín Ghetto; Top Secret: A Handbook of Codes, Ciphers, and Secret Writing; Double Cross: Deception Techniques in War; The Dark Game: True Spy Stories from Invisible Ink to CIA Moles, a finalist for the YALSA Award for Excellence in Nonfiction for Young Adults; and Secret Soldiers: How the U.S. Twenty-Third Special Troops Fooled the Nazis.Jenna LaReau is a graduate of the Parsons School of Design in New York. Great book for 9-11 year olds who are into secrets. Some history. Some mystery and lots of easy codes they will enjoy. I wrote one down so I could send letters to a grandson in code. Has formulas for invisible ink etc.
I bought this for my kids to use for fun with their friends. It is much too easy and simplistic for use by adults. Some high school kids might find it interesting but I think it's probably geared more towards pre-teens and Jr. High kids.Great for Scouting as well.
The book is well written and well illustrated. I think it would work best for kids from about 12 to 14. It starts with basic codes, and moves to more complicated ones, but always makes how they function quite clear. I list the ages to give a sensibility of the book; it is not "dumbed down". The book could be used by younger kids with some adult help, or for kids who are really interested. It would also be a good starting point for high school students.It tries hard to be as interactive as possible, always posing questions. It is a "practical" book, focusing on codes that students can use, as opposed to trying to be say a history book, that would delve deeply into say the WW II Enigma code. From the rating, you can tell I enjoyed it.
The book covers the basics of several types of ciphers as well as the basics of steganography. It's a great introduction at the middle school level. Younger kids could learn plenty from this but may need someone adept at explaining things from the material in the book.
My son absolutely loved this book. He was 11 when I got it for him and it turned out to be a quick and captivating read. The book covers a number of different codes and what not, so there's plenty to interest a young mind. Each new chapter yielded a new favorite, and it obviously got him thinking.My daughter's 10 now, and she's tackling it with his help. They've been inspired, in fact, to create their own secret code. Hopefully I'll be able to crack it!
I got this book to help me teach a spy class for elementary and middle school aged students. It's a winner. I recommended it to the parents. Great background and information, with lots of history and science. The projects are fun and will provide many hours of exploration. Top notch!
Excellent introduction to coded messages and encryption. The book covers a wide variety of methods in a very user friendly way. The book includes plenty of artwork and diagrams and real examples. I recommend it for teen's and adults.
Written mainly for younger readers ( say from 8-18), but even older people can get some interesting ideas from this. I'm not seriously into codes and ciphers, but if anyone is, this would be too basic for them. OK for an introduction.
