Don't You know You are Beautiful Just the Way You Are! was inspired by a conversation I overheard between my daughter and my niece discussing things they did not like about themselves. I was shocked, to say the least because I constantly tried to reinforce to my daughter that she was an intelligent, beautiful young lady inside and out. However, the influence of the media is strong, and young girls of color are especially vulnerable to its effects. This experience sparked my creation of the I Love Me series of books which empower children to love themselves unconditionally. I will continually strive to write books that touch the souls of readers and that promote diversity and inclusion in children's literature.

Far too often we are taught via the media that beauty come in one form. They define beauty as specific waist size, nose width, skin shade, hair type and eye color. However, beauty comes in all shapes and sizes and can't be quantified in such a limited scope. If you are looking to teach your daughter practical ways to view her physical differences from such unrealistic ideals of beauty then this book is for you.
In the 1940’s Kenneth and Mamie Clark conducted experiments that showed African American children preferred white dolls. The study helped the NAACP win the Brown vs Board of Education case that concluded that segregation was inherently unequal. That study focused on students that attended all Black schools. I would add that African American kids can develop these same attitudes when they go to all White schools. Thus, what was present in 1940’s still exist today, African American children are still deriving their standard of beauty from White Society. If you don’t believe me conduct the experiment, read your children this book and report your results in a review.
This book empowers young girls to embrace their own unique characteristics and to love and accept themselves. Too many times young women are bombarded with images of beauty that don't reflect the diversity in our society and develop low self-esteem as a result. This book addresses those issues in a compassionate, loving way, and is a must read for girls. I highly recommend this book, especially for young women of color who are often not considered, when it comes to the aesthetic ideals in the United States and around the world.
I bought this book for my 6 year old daughter because we always encourage her to love who she is and own it. The title of this book speaks for itself. My daughter has become fascinated with the book and wants to read it with me every time she comes to my house. She even recommended we give a copy to one of her friends for the holidays. No matter the color, race, or ethnicity, self-love must be taught throughout a child's upbringing and this book is sure to generate that.
My daughter and I absolutely loves this book! It really helped my daughter to see that she is beautiful just the way she is. There were even moments where she recognized similarities between herself and the character Destiny! Great read!
I think this book does a great job tackling an issue that very likely affects many young women of color. My girls definitely related and were encouraged by the reminder they're beautiful just the way they are...
Amazing book! Its so important for children to know they are perfect just the way they are. This book is a perfect example of that. I read it to my daughter and she loves it.
