The Second Mark: Courage, Corruption, and the Battle for Olympic Gold, by Joy Goodwin

From Publishers Weekly

When French judge Marie-Reine Le Gougne confessed to under-scoring a pair of Canadian figure-skaters as part of a quid pro quo deal that her country made with Russia during the 2002 Winter Olympics, she sparked the most explosive headlines the sport of ice-skating had seen since the Harding-Kerrigan fiasco. The event was extensively reported in the U.S. media, but in her first book Goodwin provides the most comprehensively researched and well told account of it so far. An Emmy Award-winning writer and producer who covers figure skating for ABC, Goodwin has used her access to athletes, judges and coaches to provide readers with a backstage view of the scandal. She chronicles the private moments of the three skating couples involved in the controversy—Russians Yelena Berezhnaya and Anton Sikharulidze; Canadians Jamie Salé and David Pelletier; and Chinese Shen Xue and Zhao Hongbo—following them from their humble beginnings on the frozen lakes of the Northern Caucasus, the training centers of rural Quebec and the frigid outdoor rinks of industrial Harbin. Although Goodwin covers all the ins and outs of the French-Russian bargain, her research allows her to go beyond the judging scandal to include the stories of how Berezhnaya and Sikharulidze were villainized by the U.S. press; how ShenÂ’s father was impoverished by the see-sawing internal politics of China and how Pelletier turned down his first opportunity to be Salé’s skating partner. The 2002 competition showcased "the greatest collection of talent ever assembled on a single night in pair skating," Goodwin writes. Her book lets readers see it from all the angles. 16 pages of b&w photos. Copyright © Reed Business Information, a division of Reed Elsevier Inc. All rights reserved.

From School Library Journal

Adult/High School–Goodwin's book grew out of the judging scandal that marred the 2002 Winter Olympics. Her focus is pair figure skating, and the controversy generated by the scoring of the "second mark," the one awarded for artistic presentation. Using artistry as her starting point, the author traces the careers of the six athletes vying for Olympic gold that year, the Chinese, Russian, and Canadian pairs. Looking at the differing environments that produced these champions, she depicts and contrasts each skater's background, training, and level and type of national support received. She explains how the countries, via their coaches, differed both in their approach to the sport and in their interpretation of artistic expression. Drawing from a year and a half of interviews with the athletes, their families, and coaches, Goodwin presents an honest and intimate portrait of the skaters, describing the physical, emotional, and financial sacrifices made in their quest for Olympic honors. The author is a good storyteller, able to evoke a range of emotions from sympathy and admiration to incredulity and suspense. What will linger long after the reading, however, is her effective personification of "courage" and "corruption" and how the perfidy of several of the adults involved contrasted with the integrity of the young athletes who, under pressure, displayed a grace beyond their years.–Dori DeSpain, Fairfax County Public Library, VA Copyright © Reed Business Information, a division of Reed Elsevier Inc. #1,392,288 in Books (See Top 100 in Books)

I am a huge fan of figure skating but have read almost no books about it. This one is wonderfully done. The author traveled to China, Canada and Russia to see where each of the three pair teams she profiles grew up and trained. She interviewed their parents and first coaches, describes the rinks they first trained on as children, and extensively profiles the coaches who got them to the Olympics. The book's profiles of the teams themselves as well as their coaches are not only valuable historical documents but also make for gripping reading. I already loved Shen and Zhao, Berezhnaya and Sikhularidze and their great coaches, Bin Yao and Tamara Moskvina. Now I also know a lot about Sale and Pelletier and their story. Really a must-read and a delightful read for skating fans. My only critiques are that the author doesnt describe the SP at the Salt Lake City Olympics at all -- a very strange omission -- and her knowledge of skating technique seems superficial. She is still a wonderful journalist and writer and her mini-biographies of these teams and their coaches are truly precious.

I liked this book because the author tried to show the event and its aftermath from the viewpoints of the Canadians, the Russians, the Chinese, and the judge. The background information about life and skating training in the three countries was very well researched and interesting. I actually found it more interesting that the actual Olympic event she was covering. Check out you tube for video of the actual performances. I will look at figure skating competitions a bit differently after reading this, which makes it a worthwhile read.

This book tells the well-known story of the vote-trading scandal in the pairs figure skating at the 2002 Salt Lake Olympics, where the Canadians were awarded a second set of gold medals. While this book opens on the night of the pairs final, much of the book is interesting background on the three skating pairs who would medal at the 2002 Games, and their coaches, parents, and others of significance to them. This is new material to most, as figure skating is one of those sports which to the average person only seems to surface every four years, but here we see the skaters progress from the provincial rinks where they started to the big time. I found somewhat disquieting (having attended the pairs final in Salt Lake) the tone of the book as it goes blow by blow through the night of the pairs final--making the claim that the crowd was unanimously on the Canadian side, and booed the marks (the second mark, which forms the title, and determined, initially, the gold medal, is for artistic merit) unmercifully. I remember some boos, some puzzlement (how many of the heavily corporate crowd really understood figure skating?), and some cheers, enchanting as the crowd found the Canadian pair. I suspect that Goodwin is indulging in a little history rewriting in a book which will be read primarily in North America, and little noted in Russia or China. Goodwin uses such phrases as "justice was done" about what was, after all, a very close decision, 5-4 including the disputed, and ultimately disqualified, French vote. A second difficulty with the book is that it really breaks little new ground on the scandal. You learn little more than the reader motivated to buy this book could have learned from the many articles which appeared in the weeks and months following the Olympics. It is a good read for human understanding of the six skaters. But it makes clear that there are more questions unanswered than answered, and it gets us little closer to the answers.

As described. Prompt service.

Good read

Figure skating is a beautiful sport, this book gives great detail about all aspects of said sport.

I guess I'm wierd, but what I loved about this book was the backstories on the six skaters, their history, families, coaches, etc. Fascinating stuff. What I got from this was a whole new level of respect and admiration for the pairs skaters coming from Russia and China. I'm also happy to see that the two Chinese skaters featured in this book will be skating in Torino 2006. I'll be watching them with great interest - at least as much as NBC allows me to see of them - and thinking about little six-year old Shen Xue and her bloody socks. There's not much new ground broken on the scandal that rocked the Salt Lake City Olympics, but for anyone interested in knowing more about the skaters involved, I highly recommend this book.

I loved this book. Compelling, and heart-breaking at times; learning the back stories on these pairs made you wish they all could have won. A well-written book giving us the cultural hardships, bravery and nearly impossible things overcome to make it to that Olympic competition. Highly recommended.

My wife and I are presently traveling through Bavaria,Austria and Salzburg. We found Rick Steve's Snapshot Munich highly informative, practical and a great book to carry along with you when visiting some of so many great places he suggested. We could not agree more with this experienced traveler's philosophy on becoming a wiser tourist without mortgaging your house in the process. We also bought his more authoritative "Germany 2013" that, in our opinion,is more intended to be read with more leasure rather than on the move, such as "Snapshot Munich, Bavaria & Salzburg".In summary, Rick does it again! A book written from the perspective of a wiser tourist that we eventually are becoming with his detailed readings and a down-to-earth view of how to have fun in an intelligent way.

I went on a trip to Munich and took this along with me. I had always wanted to travel to Germany (I took German in school and my father's side of the family is from Germany and Switzerland) so I had a good idea of what I wanted to see but this book really made the whole experience much easier. We went on the trip with a large group of people but for the most part we were left to our own devices and allowed to travel to where we wanted. As the trip went on I found that a lot of people were asking me where they should go and how to get to places specifically because I had looked through this book and knew how to get to places and what the really good sights were.I also really like the snapshot style of the book. It made it easy to read and gives a really good but quick look at the city of Munich and the surrounding areas.I would definitely buy another of these books when I travel out of the States again.

We were on longer guided walking and music tours of Austria, but had single days in Salzburg and Munich on our own. When we were about to leave Vienna, I downloaded the Kindle version of this book and it proved to be just what we needed. His suggested walking tours of the cities gave us manageable activities that let us see what we could of each city, and find reasonable places to eat. Had we been organizing longer visits on our own, we might have wanted more, but this was well worth its low price to us on this trip. I agree that trying to read the maps on the Kindle version can be inconvenient--I didn't look into this, but it might be a good idea if they put on their own website a way that you could download and print hard copies of the map to carry around and refer to (perhaps some sort of unlock code in the text of the book similar to what the "Hawaii Revealed" books had for their online resort reviews).

If you are going to this area then this is a great book to get. Small enough but includes all the necessary info. Rick Steves' guidebooks are the first I turn to when I get ready to plan a trip, and this one is really just excerpts (word for word) from the Germany and Austria ones, but since Munich, Fussen and Salzburg are my destinations for that area this book works perfectly. Don't be expecting color pictures - there are only a few black and whites (normal for Rick Steves' books), and he likes to do hand-drawn maps (some times they work well, other times they are confusing). At the end of the day this is the book I will be carrying with me on my travels to that area.

While I thought that I would miss color, glossy pictures (which this guidebook does not have), it is packed with very useful information. I used it to help plan my trip and throughout my trip. It very lightweight. It fits into any purse or backpack & doesn't look that noticeable walking around with it. The map drawings included in the pages are fairly accurate. Of course, you will get other large scale maps at the airport or central train station. Munich is very friendly & provides a lot of help for tourists. The helpful hint section for Fussen (to visit the Neuschwanstein castle) was very useful. We rented bikes & it was one of the best parts of the trip!Overall, I highly recommend this guidebook.

Amazing book that helped so much with a recent trip. Lodging, food, and sights are all easily found and organized in this book. His personalized views allow you to take or leave many things, mostly all great takes.

As always, Rick Steves' book was a terrific asset to our recent trips to Munich and Salzburg. We always feel as though he's traveling right along with us and have complete confidence in all his suggestions. He is our travel guru and we so greatly appreciate his work. Paula and Larry Nappi

I found this book helpful (and as with all of Rick Steve guides, it comes with helpful tips and tricks about the best time of day to do things, what to say and ask for, etc), but I wish he had a guide just for Munich as I did not leave the city. That said, had I been planning any day trips out of the city, I felt the content on the various options was really helpful. I'm saving it for the next time I go to Bavaria.

Let me put this within a context that might resonate better. So, imagine if I opined that all Muslims are terrorists and that anyone who isn't heterosexual is evil and less deserving of compassion and love. How fast would it take you to flag this review? This book went from a story premised on Russian folklore to one that not only degrades Christians, but it also characterizes them as duplicitous and malevolent.Look, real-life comprises layers and nuances and not one group is completely good or bad, but to malign, for instance, an entire race because of prejudice and/or ignorance is not acceptable to me; not unless such is required to advance the story. And quite frankly, I don't believe that Arden adequately justifies this plot device; which makes it seem like a self-indulgent, deliberate, and malicious subversion of Orthodox Christianity. In the end, and by juxtaposing mysticism with Orthodoxy in a "good v bad" battle (with Christianity being all bad), Arden allowed her personal bias and prejudice interfere with the organic flow of what could have been a rather enthralling read. And I couldn't help but wonder if she would have dared insinuate this sort of drivel about the Ottoman Empire, or Islam for that matter.

This is the second retelling of the Russian fairy tale “Vasilisa the Beautiful” to appear in recent months. The other one, Sarah Porter’s Vassa in the Night, sticks much closer to the original story, even though it is set in modern Brooklyn (where witch Baba Yaga runs a convenience store chain). This one, although it retains the overall feeling of a fairy tale, doesn’t follow the specific plot of the Vasilisa tale very much. On the other hand, it makes real the environment in which the original tale probably developed: Medieval (1300s) Russia, especially its heavily forested, bitterly cold northern portion. I learned interesting details of the way people coped with that environment, such as sleeping on top of the big family oven to stay warm. There are two main conflicts in the story. One is between two brothers, both spirits of Winter and Death, but one relatively benign and the other essentially evil. The other, which I found the more interesting of the two, was the conflict between the traditional pagan beliefs of the Northern people, featuring different spirits that guard homes, horses, forest, and more, and the relatively new and monotheistic Christianity, here presented (in the form of charismatic priest Father Konstantin) as primarily a religion of fear. The contrast is vividly presented in the difference between Vasya (Vasilisa) and her stepmother, Anna Ivanovna, the only two characters who can see the spirits: Vasya finds most of them friendly and treats them with kindness and respect, but to Anna, obsessed with the new religion, they are all demons. The story focuses on Vasya’s learning how to deal with both of these conflicts and their consequences as she grows to maturity, but it also develops a third, somewhat less obvious conflict: between Vasya’s independent personality, as free and nature-oriented as those of the spirits she befriends, and the very limited range of roles and behavior considered acceptable for women of her time and place, even those who, like herself, belong to a basically loving and relatively well-to-do family. She earns her fairy-tale ending, but I wondered what she would have done if she had not had magic to help her.

I think I was misled by many of the reviews and reviewers here. The book started off relatively strong, with a strong dose of seeming historical realism and a touch of magic realism and elements of Russian folk lore. However, as the novel progressed it became more cliched, following a standard "young adult" template, in my opinion. This is definitely "chick lit" (I know this term can be offensive, but I believe it's true and applicable, in this case. I suspect the overwhelming number of readers and reviewers here are female). Morozko, who starts out as a mysterious elemental force, becomes, by the end, a kind of young adult female fantasy figure--a kind of combination Mr. Rochester, Heathcliff, and distant but attractive generic "bad boy"--and at the very end, even a kind of banal "Laurel and Hardy" partner in crime.Vasya's time in Morozko's "house" has a "Nutcracker"-ish flavor to me--the young girl's fantasy of the "snow prince." Again, a very "chick lit"-ish trope. The final climax was anticlimactic for me, and the final emotions, words, and actions seemed not fully earned to me, and sometimes devolved into pulp fiction cliches.I wished for more and I wished for better, at the end. Probably won't proceed to the second book.P.S. And if one more character spoke with "asperity," I was planning to rip that word out of my dictionary. And if Morozko "raised his eyebrow" one more time, I was going to send him to a waxing salon.

Book three of the four part Dublin Trilogy is actually an insert acting as a prequel going back 18 years to a formative period in several of the Trilogy's major characters' lives. Front and center is Bunny McGarry who came across as a hardened sleeze ball in A Man With One of Those Faces, the opening entry in the Dublin Trilogy. Profane, obese, unwashed, and a violent rogue cop, he was no one a normal person would seem to want to have in their lives. Going into more depth, entry two, The Day That Never Comes softened his image considerably with tales of the many people Bunny has aided in his speckled career. Angels in the Moonlight continues that bent by introducing us to a younger and far more innocent McGarry. Along the way in his trial by fire he/we will meet bent cops, a kid he saved in a fire years ago now making his play to be Dublin's drug kingpin, a runaway jazz singer who captures his heart, rogue nuns with an agenda as well as a killer for hire FBI agent and a cop friend who will test his loyalty to the limits. If he survives he will not come out untouched by the flame. My only caveat was the video game/Hollywood action hero antics near the end that snapped the believability of the story up to that point. Superior world building, fetching characters, fast moving plot line and a few surprisingly tender moments highlight this entry into my greater European crime drama series of choice.Note: to complete the back story to the Dublin saga I recommend the free download of How To Send A Message at Caimh McDonnell's website: whitehairedirishman.com Amazon does not allow outside links so you will have to type it in by hand. A collection of various short stories, the back story on the rogue nuns caught my fancy as did several of the other shorts included. Freebies tend to be garbage where this writing was the equal to his longer work.

I loved this book! It takes my favorite character from the Dublin Trilogy (Detective Bunny McGarry) and transports us back to 1999. (On the edge of Y2K doom, among other far-more-tangible threats) McGarry’s further adventures (or should I say – his previous adventures) are very, very entertaining. Caimh McDonnell is a great storyteller. You can’t wait to turn-the-next-page. Of course, as expected, we get a great crime adventure filled with action and suspense. It is a fascinating look inside the An Garda Síochána and Ireland. McDonnell has clearly done his homework. However, a real bonus is the humor. McDonnell writes great dialog and many’s the time I had to put the book down to recover from a fit of laughter. His great, dry Irish wit is on ample display. He throws darts at some deserving targets that we love to see skewered. I cannot get enough. So, when you finish this outstanding read you will want to follow the further adventures of Detective Sergeant Bunny McGarry and the Gardaí in the first two books of the Dublin trilogy: A Man With One Of Those Faces and The Day That Never Comes. In addition, rumor has it that the third book in the Dublin trilogy is coming our way soon. That’s good news for anyone who likes a great, entertaining story well told.

I continue to enjoy this author and his writings. This is another well written novel with a decent plot and with enough intrigue to keep things rolling along.I seldom critique anyone English nor sentence structure but in this case I consider it only right to report that once again I find this novel like the others flawless. This point may not be thought of as a big deal but there is nothing more distracting than being bombarded with poor sentence structure and spelling errors. If I was to point out what I do see as a fault it is the numbering of the novels in the trilogy. In my opinion this, the third book should be read first. By so doing one would better understand conflicts in the books presently numbered one and two.Critic

Angels in the Moonlight was a fun read. As the subtitle states, this is a prequel tothe Dublin Trilogy, set in 1999, and fleshes out the Bunny McGarry character from thoseearlier novels. The McGarry we knew through those stories was an irascible, unpredictableloner and often a deus (of chaos)-ex-machina. Angels in the Moonlight humanizes Bunny through three main story lines. There'sa love story when McGarry meets Simone, a mysterious, sultry American on the lam.We meet Bunny's partner in the Garda, Gringo. Some of the best and funniest dialoguein the book is contained in their conversations. And a cops and robbers story where theGarda has to take down a ring of Dublin thieves attempting to branch out into thedrug trade. I read the book in two sittings and probably would have finished it in one if I hadn'tstarted it so late in the day. The three arcs work well together and are intertwined in away that keeps you repeatedly going to just one more chapter late into the night. McDonnell injects a lot of humor into his novels and there were some very funnymoments in Angels in the Moonlight. The dialogue is wonderful (and us Yanks get tolearn a lot of Dublin slang) as well as hilarious situations, like the opening scenewith the "jumper". A review I read of his first book, "A Man with One of Those Faces",compared McDonnell to Carl Hiassen and Elmore Leonard. That's a very apt descriptionof his fiction. In the same mold would be Don Winslow’s early books with Neal Carey,Gregory McDonald's immortal Fletch series, George Chesbro's more obscure Mongoseries, and of course the multiple series of Tim Hallinan. If you’ve enjoyed any of thoseauthors, you'll love this book. I read the Kindle edition and the copyediting was well done. I didn't spot any misspellingsand there weren't any jarring errors in layout that interrupted the read. To be completely transparent, I received a review copy of Angels in the Moonlightfrom the author after he asked for review volunteers on his mailing list. But I don't knowthe author. I've just enjoyed the previous books in the Dublin Trilogy and thank thereviewers who convinced me to give Caihm McDonnell a try.

Forty years ago I stupidly sold my last boat. I have missed it every day since. It was my sixth and best boat, a Chrysler Lonestar. Three of these six boats I built myself, one I shared the work with my father. Building a plywood boat is a bagatelle particularly using the stitch and glue method. The seventh boat is built by this method. In the process I have bought six books from Amazon though all of the information that I needed was free on the internet. The books are “Go Build Your Own Boat” and Build The New Instant Boat by Harold Payson, “Boats with an open Mind” by Philip Bolger, “Boat Building For Beginners” by Jim Michalak, “Ultra Simple Boat Building” by Gavin Atkin and “Understanding Boat Design” by Ted Brewer There are separate reviews for each of these books.Ultra Simple Boat Building” by Gavin Atkin is an excellent book for the home builder and I give it five stars. It features 17 very complete plans and instructions for a number of small plywood boats. The diagrams and dimensions are easy to read. Adkin's designs have flotation chambers which are a great safety feature. He explains Epoxy stitch and glue and polyurethane stitch and glue. He also includes a technique called simplified chine log construction. This method places a frame member outside of the hull along the chine. Bolger used this technique in Tortoise and justified it on grounds that it made the boat easier to clean and protected the plywood chine. He believed that it was hydrodynamically satisfactory. For small slow moving displacement hulls he is probably correct. For faster powered planing hulls I have my doubts. It is not completely clear that it really simplifies the construction over say placing the chine log inside the hull in the conventional manner. No matter, the resultant boat will probably be satisfactory. Most of these boats are small and narrow with low sides and are suitable for quiet waters. I know of one individual who takes one off shore here near Los Angeles where it is paddled like a kayak. He has not yet drowned and probably will be okay. Adkin also included plans for a “Puddle Duck Racer”which would be a great choice for someone who enjoys camaraderie and mild competition. I am intrigued by “Dogsbody” which of the offerings in this book is my favorite. One should pay attention to the recommended loadings of Atkin's boats for it could be catastrophic to over load them. Adkin presents a method, not his own apparently, of building a skiff that requires no plans. I found this intriguing because I and a partner once (1953) built a boat using a very similar method. That boat was assembled using glue and light framing with brass screws. I think it cost less than $20 at the time. It saw frequent service with a 5 hp Johnson outboard and lasted at least 10 years when I lost track of it. Adkin offered a piece of simple advice. When going to the store always buy a clamp. You cannot have too many clamps. I think Norm Abrams (This Old House) once made a similar recommendation.

This book is not for the amateur boat builder looking for simple easy to understand step by step instructions. This book is confusingly written and definitely NOT for the beginning boat builder expecting to see simple step by step instructions to follow to build a boat. This is easily one of the most confusing books with unnecessary BS I have EVER read.I read the entire book and couldn’t build not one of these boats if my life depended on it.I couldn’t even do it with the help of the book because it’s that bad you turn to the pages with the actual boat designs and specifications and that’s all you get no step by step no take this and cut to this length then set to the side and take this and cut this length. None of that at all.Just numbers and figures and your supposed to just figure it out.

Not as creative as I hoped it would be.

This book belongs on the shelf of anyone who is contemplating building their own boat. This book was a special treat for me because there is a picture of a boat I built in it. The prospect of building a boat can be very overwhelming. It is a process of figuring out your needs and then deciding on an appropriate design. This is followed by determining if you have the tools, money, space, skill, and time to see a project go from a pile of wood to a pleasant afternoon sailing on a local lake with your family. If you are like me you begin this process by reading as much as you possibly can prior to actually creating sawdust. Gavin Atkin's book is divided into two parts. The first part deals with the "how" to build a boat. Although you may supplement this information with additional material from other sources, Atkin gives enough practical information to actually build a boat. Atkin makes building a boat for someone who has never done it seem very doable, even fun. The second part of the book is filled with designs to whet the appetite of anyone whois in the process of trying to decide what would would be the right boat for them. Mr. Atkin includes complete plans for seventeen of his own designs, all very doable, plus he reviews designs done by other popular designers. My boat recently succumbed to dry rot and was hauled to the dump. I am now in the process of deciding which is the "right" boat to build and Gavin Atkin's book, "Ultrasimple Boatbuilding", has renewed my interest in building my own boat again.

This is a good book to get someone started in boat building. It starts out with easy to follow explanations of the tools and techniques needed to build very simple but useful plywood boats, such as the author's "mouse" series. He outlines three different methods of assembly using, timber joints, fiberglass tape and epoxy, and polyurethane glues with open mesh type fiberglass drywall tape. With the latter two methods, the hull panels are temporarily stitched together with adhesive tape, zip ties or wire ties. He gives detailed explanations on each of these three methods. He also provides thirteen of his own designs, which include his popular "mouse" series, two powerboats, and three sailboats. The smaller "mouse" boats are probably tiny enough to tiny enough to store in an apartment, which might make them appealing for those who have no outside property to store their boats. He also shows examples from other ply boat designs, both well known, such as Bolger and Michalak, as well as less well known ones. The only quibble I have is his method drawing the various panels which make up the hull. His method, though workable (it took me some time to figure it out) is not standard in the boat building world. So, anyone who gets used to his method might be lost at sea when trying to draw panels from another designer's work.Other than that, I think it's good enough to earn a permanent place on my bookshelf.

This is a lovely book, but I returned it because we decided not to go to Romania this year. It would be especially nice for someone who is taking a tour because of the photos and descriptions without details about logistics. We were planning to drive and travel independently. I thought some of the driving tours were very nice. I would buy it again when we travel there.

Excellent guidebook. Thorough information, beautiful pictures by Steve Weinberg and interesting articles about culture (music, resistance fighters, Constantin Brancusi, myths, mining, fauna, healing waters, romanian art, gypsies, winemaking). It features a guided walk of old Bucharest, a few driving tours across the countryside (Muntenia, Oltenia, Transylvania, Banat, Maramures and Moldavia) and boat tour of the Danube Delta. I'm giving it 4 starts because the only city map featured is that of Bucharest. It includes some logistics details and lodging/dining options, but I always check the Internet for the latest news about that. All in all, a great guidebook.

best tour guide for the country. Read it carefully before going and decide by what you read what to visit and what to leave for another visit. Read the travelwize part where it reminds you of the fact that even short distances will kill a lot of hours due to the roads. Use the book and you will be rewarded.

Great photos

Good book for Romania! Great info about the country, top sites to visit, customs, etc. Used it for my trip to Romania! Was great!

It's great to see a book on Romania published by the prestigious National Geographic. There are many attractive pictures, maps and travel ideas and it is overall a great resource for someone who is introduced to this East European country. However, as an amateur photographer and someone who lived and traveled through Romania for many years, I have to point out 2 cons. First, the book is very much oriented towards the old and traditionalism, and you will have a hard time finding any buildings built after WW2, yet alone after the fall of communism (1989). I love the old yet it would have been nice to see at least a few pages dedicated to the more modern facade of Romania. To some degree, it feels like a National Geographic Magazine from the 60s. Second, I am very surprised at some of the choices for photographs. As a prime example the village of Vinga is represented by an ordinary church when it has one of the most famous and impressive churches in Western Romania - a huge Bulgarian Cathedral. Arad, a city of close to 200,000 which used to be called "little Vienna" due to its architecture, gets one picture: a glimpse of a local market.
