Very helpful.Have stopped feeling like there's something wrong with ME and instead focus on learning to cope productively with spouse's anger issues. How to change myself, not spouse. It's all about boundaries. Too much advice out there offers ending relationships, which is absurd if the relationship is long, committed, and essentially good. Dr Nay recognizes that simply leaving a partner isn't always an acceptable option. He offers useful strategies instead, ones that help repair damaged self-esteem and futile responses to someone else's issues. Thanks Dr Nay.

This was an excellent self help book filled with practical workable solutions on ways to help one who is in a relationship with an angry person. Through practicing the exercises I gained insight and emotional strength and realized that I deserved better and that I didn't HAVE to be in the relationship so I ended it!

Finally! A book on anger that makes sense and is "usable" with clients. Since finding this book and it's companion about managing anger, I feel I can actually make a difference with folks who have learned to express anger in ways that are harmful to their lives. Dr. Nay is easy to understand and each chapter logically builds on the previous one.

Author W. Robert Nay covers the issues of dealing with angry partners in a clear and succinct manner. We can't change them! It was both disturbing and refreshing to realize that I wasn't the only person to ever deal with this kind of relationship. Thank you for giving me insight and tools to better handle myself in this situation.

We read this first at the library, and my son kept talking about it, so we bought a copy for home. This is a very cute retelling of the story of the little red hen. In this version, she makes pizza. Instead of refusing to share at the end because nobody had helped her, she does share the pizza with her three friends, who then in turn help with the washing up. Positive message, and fun illustrations done in a collage style.

It was a cute take on the classic story and had a slightly different ending, which my students weren't necessarily expecting. But I liked the ending as a good example to my students of kindness, sharing, and then still pitching in to help when someone shares and is kind to you. The students also enjoyed the silly little elements added, like the can of worms on the shelf or the extras that the Little Red Hen would buy.

I was shocked to find that the important life lesson in this classic children's tale had been distorted in this revised story. Instead of not participating in the fruits of the hen's labor, in this version the slackers who refused to help get to eat the hen's pizza anyway. Then in an apparent epiphany they do agree to clean up.Since young children enjoy hearing stories repeatedly, I purchased this book this book at the same time I ordered the classic version so my grandchildren could read two slightly different versions. After reading this revisionist version I threw it away. The classic version is the life lesson I want my grandchildren to learn and is the only version I gave them.The illustrations and physical book were fine. It is the revised message I object to and is the reason I threw the book away and do not recommend it to others.

Another great book to read aloud. I heard nothing but laughs in my classroom.

Love this.. much better ending than the original

My daughter is 11 and this is still one of her favorite books. I just bought it in hardcover to give to her for her birthday, since apparently she is going to love it forever. The first sentence my daughter ever read (age four) was in this book, I found out years later. The sentence was, "Not I, said the cat."If the original story of the Little Red Hen bugs you because the lazy animals are motivated by punishment rather than reward, you will like this book much better. In this version the Little Ren Hen still gets no help in the production phase, but she shares the fruits of her labor anyway. Her grateful friends then clean up for her while she rests.Both my two daughters and I adore the illustrations in The Little Red Hen Makes a Pizza. They are made by cutting and gluing various papers. I have looked at them of over 10 years, and I still always find something new to admire. I have looked for other books illustrated with cut paper by this same illustrator but have not found any, which is a true loss to the world of children's books.I'm a kindergarten teacher and I have to read The Little Red Hen as part of our Teamwork unit. I always read The Little Red Hen Makes a Pizza afterward, and my students always like it better than the original because all the animals are treated well.I hope you and your family will enjoy your copy of The Little Red Hen Makes a Pizza.You cannot go wrong with this book. It's great!

If you're looking for an analysis and meta-discussion about Calvin and Hobbes, this is the book for you.Hingston digs into a few beloved tropes of the series (i.e. Spaceman Spiff and other fantastic devices, Calvinball) and is deeply aware of the world of Calvin and Hobbes study and pop culture. He sheds new light (for me, anyway) on Watterson as an artist, the publication process, and the end of the series.I wished he would've discussed Calvin's relationships a bit more (especially with Hobbes) and Hobbes himself, but obviously he can't analyze ever aspect of the series.I firmly recommend it.

A nice little package, priced pretty fair for its brevity. Good for fans of the strip or the artist.

Came new and with no issues

People who loved Calvin and Hobbes--and who didn't--who doesn't still--love Calvin and Hobbes?--were sad when Bill Watterson quit writing the beloved comic strip in 1995. Michael Hingston was among the crowd of C&H lovers, and has written a tribute in Let's Go Exploring. Calvin and Hobbes, book 9 in ECW Press's Pop Classics series.Hingston tells a little of Watterson's story, then discusses some of the themes and storylines that Watterson weaves through the ten years of comic strips. As C&H readers are well aware, "Perhaps the single most common premise in the strip involves Calvin imagining one part of his real world suddenly transformed." Calvin's transmogrifier (a cardboard box) assisted in transforming Calvin himself.Calvin and Hobbes stretched the limits of childhood imagination, taking readers back to their childhood play time. But there was a melancholy underlying the strip, as Calvin had little contact or interaction with his peers. Hingston writes, "Calvin and Hobbes is, on a fundamental level, a strip about loneliness: the ways we keep it at bay, insulate ourselves from it, and , occasionally, when our options run out, give in to it. Imagination is a coping mechanism, and an extremely effective one at that."I was not previously aware of Watterson's reclusive ways. He does not appear in public, rarely grants interviews, and does not interact with his many fans. Nor did he ever embrace any kind of merchandising. Other than books containing the strips, you won't find C&H items for sale, despite the millions he could have made off toys and other items.I enjoyed this retrospective; I had forgotten how much I enjoyed these comics. Watterson shocked the comic world when he stepped out of it at the height of his fame. As Hingston notes, "The end of Calvin and Hobbes came faster than almost anyone at the time expected." My only beef with Hingston is this: how can you write a whole book about Calvin and Hobbes and not include a single strip? In many cases, Hingston describes a strip in great detail; why not include it right there in the book? Did the publisher not want to mess with getting the rights to do so? Thankfully, the internet saves the day. Now to log on and reacquaint myself with a funny little boy and his pet tiger.Thanks to Edelweiss and the publisher for the complimentary electronic review copy!

Calvin and Hobbes was my generations' reason to read the newspaper, and Michael Hingston examines why. This book kept me reading way past bedtime. It made me happy/sad. Let's Go Exploring is written conversationally which I really appreciated. He captures all the whimsy and yes, the sadness that Calvin and Hobbes is no more. Mr Hingston gives the background on the strip's creator and his reasons for stopping the strip. I was not aware that the comic's creator never licensed the Calvin and Hobbes images and the reasoning behind his decision. Calvin and Hobbes have stood the test of time, and Michael Hingston does them and their creator, as well as their impact, justice.I can see this book as a discussion group selection, as I certainly want to share, discuss, and debate.

At one time, before the advent of that internet thing, we all read newspapers, pretty much everyday. And, on Sundays, we devoted hours to going through all the Sunday sections, most particularly, everyone's favorite section - the Sunday funnies. Nowadays newspapers barely exist and their buildings such as the LA Times building are vacant and deserted and lifeless. I haven't picked up a paper in ages except the complimentary hotel copies. But the Sunday funnies ruled and in the eighties - besides Peanuts -there was Calvin and Hobbes. Calvin and Hobbes was the best!This fairly short book examines the comic strip, talks about how wonderful it was, and how Bill Watterson ended the strip, and went into seclusion. Great book. Doesn't try to make the comic fit into any preconceived ideas.

Jet and Turbine Aero Engines by former RAF pilot Bill Gunsten is a delightful qualitative survey into the development of air breathing jet engines. My comments are based on the second edition of the book. If I have one constructive criticism to make of the book, it is that I'm hoping the material can be structured in a better way in upcoming editions.Comprising of 230 pages, the book starts off with an insightful look at the science behind the working of gas turbines. 100 pages are dedicated to how the different components function, their construction and installation.In 'Principles', Mr. Gunsten outlines the chief differences between gas turbines and internal combustion engines. He describes the unique cycles of both processes and defines what we mean by the different types of efficiency.In 'Compressors', the author distinguishes between an axial compressor and a centrifugal compressor. A pertinent note is that the chief design challenges with both rest on the aerodynamic considerations of air-blade interaction, temperature resistance of the materials, staying clear of surge and balancing capacity when operating off design points.In 'Combustion', we read about the unique requirements of air/fuel ratios in gas turbines followed by the methods employed to atomize and spray fuel into the air and few key points to keep in mind such as reducing residence time of the air-fuel mixture to reduce NOX production.In 'Turbines', we find material on the harsh demands asked of the turbine and blade geometry needed in order to capture some of the exhaust energy and expand it. They are the most important power producing component of the system.The rest of Part I is about jet pipes, engine systems and installation.The historical progress of jet turbines arrives in Part II and makes for good reading as it is full of interesting facts. It becomes easy for one to get lost in the details of model names, inventors and dates. However, the main point is clear that jet engines introduced a marked paradigm shift in how we think about transportation. Remarkable amount of development has happened within the field in just 60 years, where we went from clunky complicated systems were failures were the order of the day to high bypass ratio turbofans producing several thousand pounds of thrust with more reliability, efficiency, reduced noise and emissions. In 60 years, we also put man on the moon!The struggles of the bygone era is not lost on readers. Key figures such as F. Whittle met with considerable inertia to advance their ideas on their own turf, their only fault being they were down the order in ranks and their concepts substantially outside the state of the art. Others like von Ohain were able to conceive, build and test working models in just a few years. Why and how did those happen? The book describes those stories.One can easily fathom the impact jet aircrafts made in the World War II, but it is anyone's guess how many lives could have been saved if the Allies had a mature jet technology earlier than history has it.The author has ended the book with the quip that inspite of the computer power we have in our possession, a new engine takes as many years to design these days as in 1944 it took weeks. Somewhat ironic but true. Given how competitive the GT market is, I'm sure its not just design work that takes away from time to market. Some of the best turbofans on wide body jets such as the Trent 1000 for the Dreamliner was conceived of way back in the day but the chunk of development cost and time goes into the rigorous validation testing to prove the engine's airworthiness and that itself takes years.

Just lots and lots of fun. A little less techy than some jet books, although it definitely assumes a solid grounding in basic engineering and physics. The author is a patriotic Brit and swells with justified pride in recounting the vision, courage, and perseverance of Frank Whittle in particular, whom he obviously reveres. He's much less complimentary about the brass in the RAF and other governmental obstructionists.The discussion of theory and design is accessible and enjoyable. Gunston makes passing references to oddball solutions that never came to fruition despite clear advantages--thought-provoking for those who like to think out of the box. Unfortunately, he gets into the weeds a bit with historical detail about various manufacturers, makes, and models, getting more into the politics of development rather than sticking to the technical aspects.

Very technical & exhaustively detailed - might be more than some want to know. But if you read this, you WILL have a solid grasp of how turbine engines work.

A must for the layman or even the mildly well informed wishing to understand the jet engine.Also Bill Gunstons Piston Aero Engines is worth a look, but Bills best in my opinion is his biograpphy of Roy Fedden - "Fedden" published by the Rolls Royce historical trust."Not much of an engineer", Hookers biography is also essential reading for those interested in the jet plane.Brett O'Maley

A brilliant compilation of the technological advancements made in turbine engine propulsion for aircraft systems. I highly recommend it be used in engineering colleges by future aerospace engineers.

Fantastic. Technical yet readable. A gem.

Very good book. The first part is a technical description on engines and the second one is the history of engine's developpement.

There are many wonderful stories written by this author just waiting to be opened and enjoyed. Here is the first in a series about those who served in the military and came back to the U.S., though not home. In using the genre of fiction, readers will be grabbed by the tension, suspension and never-ending action of heroes who go where they are sent. These soldiers have been hand-picked, and their identity is supposed to be known by a few though as readers will see that might not be the case after all.It’s a well-crafted tale of being chosen to serve the country again though if caught they will be disavowed by the country they serve. I read the book in short order because it was so engaging and suspense filled! Plus, I love those who serve in the military as well as the family they leave to do so. While it is true that not all have happy ever after endings, readers can begin to understand why as the characters use their skills in a setting far removed from everyday life here. They also come home at times unable to reintegrate into society or their marriages.Ronnie Kendig’s characters are heroes who fight to live and fight to help others live. Sometimes the costs are seen on the outside though they are very real as one character named Sydney learned both at home and while traveling abroad. There is hope infused in the story many times and there is mention of a ministry to help soldiers, through a passing character.The novel caused my heart to race and I couldn’t put the book down! I stayed up late one night to finish the book because I was so involved in the story, and I wanted to see how it was going to end. If you’re looking for a book that really grabs you the moment you open the cover, look no further. There are three other novels in the series that I hope to read and share with you very soon. Ronie Kendig is incredible! She is consistently amazing! And she created Tox! Best. Hero. Ever. (The TOX Files Series)A couple of warnings for Nightshade. Do not start reading it 25 minutes before you have to start getting ready for church. You will talk yourself into the belief that you really don’t need all that time to get ready when you really do. Don’t read before bed unless you don’t mind hardly any sleep or struggling to put your contacts in the next morning. Finally, don’t start when waiting in the car for your daughter who will be out in 2 minutes. You might ask her to read to you on the drive to school!I loved Nightshade! The action starts at the beginning and just keeps going. I really liked the whole concept of a team of discarded heroes working covertly together. I loved ‘meeting’ the other team members and can’t wait to read the other stories in the series.I also really liked both Max and Sydney, even though there was a time or two or three (I’m talking to you Sydney!) I wanted to pull them aside and have a quick chat with them. The growth in max throughout the book was great to read and believable. I also loved the ending especially the last line! I can’t wait to start book two! Just awesome!

How have I not read this series before??? When the series originally came out, I had not read this author's work yet. Since then, I have read everything I can get my hands on! Now, with the new rewrites and updates to the series, I decided it was a perfect time to catch up!I'm so glad I did! I could hardly set this book down because I was so invested with these two characters. Nightshade was action packed and did a great job of introducing the characters that I know will be part of the series.And I really liked both Max and Sydney, even though I felt that each of them made some decisions that would hurt the other at times. But, it all worked so well together to blend into the perfect situations that were filled with tension. I loved it!

It's fast-paced, full of suspense, a page burner: all of this and more! Interwoven with a story of love that's been crushed yet hasn't died. It's a story of heroes and misguided betrayal attempts. I couldn't put it down, yet did, so that I could absorb what was going on without moving past meaty stuff. I am impatiently waiting for the next one. Thanks, Ms. Kendig, for sharing your gift of story telling and your skill at your craft.

Didn't read theses books when they were releases before,but glad I decided to try the prerelease. Loved the raw emotions and dealing with the real affects of combat. I also was rooting for the characters and gripped by the constant twists and action. Could hardly put it down.

Intense storyline - great plot - makes you root for the characters to choose well and persevere in spite of odds. Love her books!

I must say that at first I thought the first version was the best, but after finishing the second one, they are both really great. I do have the first copies of the series and can't wait to read the new versions of the upcoming books. Ronie Kendig is my favorite author and have to confess to rereading anything she writes several times over.

I also read the first edition of Nightshade around 2012, loved it then, loved it this time around.

About the Author

Dr. Marc Zvi Brettler is the Dora Golding Professor of Biblical Studies at Brandeis University. He contributed to all volumes of the My People's Prayer Book: Traditional Prayers, Modern Commentaries series, winner of the National Jewish Book Award, and to My People's Passover Haggadah: Traditional Texts, Modern Commentaries; Who by Fire, Who by Water―Un'taneh Tokef; All These Vows―Kol Nidre; May God Remember: Memory and Memorializing in Judaism―Yizkor; and We Have Sinned: Sin and Confession in Judaism―Ashamnu and Al Chet (all Jewish Lights). He is coeditor of The Jewish Annotated New Testament and The Jewish Study Bible, which won the National Jewish Book Award; co-author of The Bible and the Believer; and author of How to Read the Jewish Bible, among other books and articles. He has also been interviewed on National Public Radio’s Fresh Air by Terry Gross.
