Good resource

Access is, of course, a database program. Unlike many of the big database programs, it is closely integrated with a quite sophisticated front end package to enable the creation of easy to use input forms and quite good looking reports to take the data stored in the database and present it to the outside world in a clear and useful format.A database is useless unless you have a way to put data into and take it out of the database. This book mostly covers the setting up of input forms and output reports. It obviously won't be your only Access book, because you'll need something to describe how to set up a database. So this is a specialty book, that does an excellent job of covering this important aspect.Selecting data out of the database to then present is sometimes a problem. Most beginning books just use the Access QBE to produce the data. Often this is enough, but this book goes just a bit into SQL that allows you to do so much more. While this is not a book on SQL, this is a good start to give you enough information to know if this is a direction you need to go.All in all, this is a very useful book to enable you to get more utility ot of an Access database.

I know how to use Access... sort of. I took this book and used it to update my knowledge of Access Forms & Reports. I just didn't realize how MUCH I was lacking in my understanding of what is available. This book is not only a great book for covering the basics (and advanced topics) for using Forms and Reports (templates and creating your own). It is ALSO a great reference book.I have a lot of Brian Underdahl's books on my shelf. Most of them I use continually as reference - when I simply cannot remember (or find) how to do something with the software I use, I find myself STILL reaching for his books.Great book - five stars. Mr. Underdahl's writing style is what I enjoy and when you find a technical writer that you enjoy, you sick with him/her. Check out his other books, "Flash MX Complete Reference" and "Create Your OWn DVDs" - I use these ALL the time.J

First, it is important to realize what this book is not. It is not a complete Access reference book. It will not teach you database theory and all aspects of data normalization. It does not cover advanced techniques such as VBA programming, the ADO object model or using the Windows API.So what do you get from this book? A fantastic introduction to developing forms, reports and queries. In the tradition of the Dummies series, the author gently guides the novice towards building expertise in this narrow but all important aspect of Microsoft Access. With a conversational style, each step in creating a report, form or query is clearly explained. Also, the reasons for creating a report or form, and the differences between the two are presented. Although the title doesn't mention queries, because they are integral to producing reports and forms, several chapters deal with queries. Finally, two chapters discuss enhancing queries with SQL and troubleshooting those queries when things go wrong.In summary, by spending a few days with the author, via this book, a beginning Access programmer can quickly become adept at designing forms and generating reports.

I have shelves filled with computer "How To" type books and in the past have stayed away from the "Dummies" series thinking them to be a bit too simplified. However, recently I needed to get up to speed with Microsoft's Access, specifically in order to prepare reports. So I bought Access Forms & Reports for Dummies by Brian Underdahl. I found this book to be a refreshing diversion from the normally dry and sometimes obtuse computer books of the past. Mr. Underdahl has a colloquial writing style which is not only entertaining but highly informative. Within a very short period of time I found myself successfully creating Forms and Reports which made my work go much smoother. I highly recommend this book to anyone who needs to understand Access and quickly create Forms and Reports.

I have been using Access for 8 years or so and always had reports I wanted but were never able to construct. A short time with Brian's book and now I have all the reports I have ever dreamed of. This book makes forms and reports a simple task. Thank you Brian.

GEB is a singularity of very cool ideas.Some of the topics explored: artificial intelligence, cognitive science, mathematics, programming, consciousness, zen, philosophy, linguistics, neuroscience, genetics, physics, music, art, logic, infinity, paradox, self-similarity. Metamathematics. Metathinking. Meta-everything.The author said he was trying to make the point that consciousness was recursive, a kind of mental fractal. Your mind will certainly feel that way when you are done.This is not a dry discussion of these topics. The author recognizes that he's exploring things that are intrinsically fascinating and fun, and has fun with them the whole way through. He doesn't just discuss the ideas, he demonstrates them, sometimes while he's discussing them, in clever and subtle ways.Inbetween chapters, he switches to a dialogue format between fantasy characters; here he plays with the ideas being discussed, and performs postmodern literary experiments. For example, one of his dialogues makes sense read both forwards and backwards. In another, the characters jump into a book, and then jump deeper into a book that was in the book. In yet another, a programmer calmly explains the function and output of a chatbot while the chatbot calmly explains the function and output of the programmer. I find the author's sense of humor in these delightful.In a word, it's brilliant. GEB combines the playful spirit of Lewis Carroll, the labyrinthine madness of Borges, the structural perfectionism of Joyce, the elegant beauty of mathematics, and the quintessential fascination of mind, all under one roof. It's become something of a cult phenomenon, and it has its own subreddit, r/GEB, and even its own MIT course.Does the book succeed in its goal? One of the common criticisms is that the author never gets to the point and proves his thesis, and instead spends time on endlessly swirling diversions. But I don't blame him; the task of connecting mind to math is insanely speculative territory. All he can do is spiral the topic and view it from every conceivable direction. He decided to take a loopy approach to a loopy idea, and I think that's very fitting. If you want a more linear approach to the same idea, you could read I Am A Strange Loop. However, the way GEB weaves a tapestry of interrelated ideas, rather than focusing on just one, is a major part of its charm.In the grand line of reductionism, where we in theory reduce consciousness to cognitive science to neuroscience to biology to chemistry to physics to math to metamath, GEB positions itself at the wraparound point at unsigned infinity, where the opposite ends of the spectrum meet.It is an utter gem, a classic, and a pleasure to read. I cannot recommend it enough.

I have had a copy of this wonderful book ever since it was published. I went looking for my copy the other day and could not find my copy! Instant panic. So glad to have another copy. I must have loaned it to someone, I think. At any rate, it is essential for any intellectual's library. Also, Douglas Hofstadter has a wonderful sense of humor and he manages the improbable job of linking three extraordinarily, uniquely creative icons of Western culture.

This book completely changed my life when I read it in high school. The connections the author makes between art, music, math, and formal systems is not only clever, but profound. The dialogues between the characters that accompany each chapter and humorous but educational. Some chapters are a breeze while others -- especially the one on TNT (Typographical Number Theory) -- are difficult. Yet, taken as a whole, the book is a cohesive treatise on the marvels of nature and life itself. Decades later, here I am, still in a related field, and yet always coming back to GEB as the foundation of my intellectual journey.

I am proudly one of the many fanboys of this book. While I don't think it is quite accessible to just any audience, I do think that it is a must read for any academic, particularly in a mathematically rigorous field. The book meanders, taking its time, through a myriad of topics, from music theory to painting to artificial intelligence. At each step of the way, however, Hofstadter includes "meta" jokes and puzzles about the ideas in the work, which helps to tie the book together until the disparate ideas are weaved together at the end under the auspices of Gödel's incompleteness theorems. In the introduction to this edition, Hofstadter laments that so few readers were able to pick out his true thesis in the work. His explanation is that the book is about "how cognition and thinking emerge from well-hidden neurological mechanisms." However, don't expect a dry, direct approach to that question. Hofstadter couches that single question in an expansive frame that offers an indelible glimpse into the mind of a true thinker.

Gödel, Escher, Bach is the type of book that one is lucky to read once in a lifetime. Or perhaps this statement is not true. I found my copy used, with withered pages and a somewhat aged spine. The act of reading was a strange bittersweet loop, for as I found my enjoyment and understanding growing throughout, parallel the binding started to give, a bulk of pages started to break off, a page or two turned too quickly resulted in a tear, and I found the book aging before my eyes. I'm afraid that my copy will never be what it once was, but then such is life. Even a damaged book such as this one can bring insight; just as Beethoven could still compose symphonies while deaf, or Van Gogh could still paint with a missing ear, my personal copy of this slightly tattered book has spoken to me in a unique way and I am grateful to have found its voice before it was too far gone to enjoy.

Not angry, but insane. This booklet is an incredible supplement to the core rulebook, featuring literally everything you can do in the 1920's as an investigator. It's easy to mix-and-match to create custom occupations as well. The book also contains the standard character creation sheets in the back and the guide to creating characters as well.Please note that this is a supplemental book and does not go in-depth to what the character traits are (the core rulebook does, obviously), but does include trait bonuses and penalties. This book also contains sections on fashion, weaponry, auto-transportation, and their monetary value.The weaponry section does not include stats for the weapons but does include monetary value, the core rulebook does. So in order to play an adventure in the 1920's, I recommend bringing both books with you.

Just remember, the NFA wasn't passed until 1934. That means you could legally buy a Thompson and probably could get a m1918 if you could contact the manufacturer. Even after the NFA, you could buy it, you just had to pay a $200 tax stamp and have a background check by the feds.

This book is EXTREMELY helpful if you don't want to do a ton of research on the 20s right off the bat. If I had known about this prior to being introduced to CoC, I would've bought it just for the information value. There is a lot of good general information that is meant to paint the most accurate picture possible of the era possible -- political climate, popular trends, technology, science, medicine, the list goes on. Plus, there are lists of occupations, weapons, and vehicles with appropriate stats for the game. This means you won't have to make up CoC stats all by yourself; if you're a keeper it provides a benchmark you can use to tweak stats at your leisure.In short, if you want to avoid Wikipedia and a half-dozen other sites which may drive you to Cthulhean depths of insanity before you even start playing, this is a great 1920s resource to get you started!

The 1920's investigators companion is the perfect sourcebook for Call of Cthulhu player's.The book offers a great source of information that aides the player's and keeper(gamemaster).The book offers a wealth of knowledge,from the background of the 1920's to becoming an investigator,occupations and skills.Equipment,vehicles and mundane information really helps with bringing the 1920's to life.I highly reccomend thi book for all it's knowledgeable refrences that helps with the 1920's itself.This is a book that should be amongst anyone's Call of Cthulhu collection,for it will be of great use.Don't pass this book by.Wether your a player or a keeper(gamemaster),this book is great to have,especially when prepariing to descend into the mythos and the 1920's.

Outdated, but useful until I purchased the new one, now it probably wont be used at all

Quite possibly my favorite CoC supplement ever! So much atmosphere and options in this book. My players love it, as well. Anyone who plays "classic" 1920's Call of Cthulhu should own this book.

Arrived early & undamaged

Nice supplement for Investigators. While there's tons of material for Game Master's, this product gives the Investigator something to run with. Highly recommended.
