As many of you know, Tracy & I teach an Accent Reduction Class at a university here in town. Every time we teach the lesson on vowels we end up fighting (er... discussing) about weather the sounds in the words "cot" and "caught" are any different. When I saw this quiz on a friends blog I had to laugh because we taught that lesson just this past Friday. It all comes down to what kind of American accent each of us has. Yes, Americans have accents, and this quiz pegged me... northerner through and through! (and proud of my Michigan heritage thank you very much!)
What American accent do you have?
Your Result: The Inland North

You may think you speak "Standard English straight out of the dictionary" but when you step away from the Great Lakes you get asked annoying questions like "Are you from Wisconsin?" or "Are you from Chicago?" Chances are you call carbonated drinks "pop."

The Midland
The Northeast
Philadelphia
The South
The West
Boston

So what did you answer? Are "cot" and "caught" said the same with your accent? They are with mine.

I'm 100% Inland North! Accent? No way - just CORRECT pronunciation! :O) Oh, and "cot" and "caught" are definitely different...

Oh yes, "cot" and "caught" are definitely different.
I have to swallow my humble pie and acknowledge my northern accent, but I drink my pop with pride, eh!?!

I'm a Midlander, so I'll need a demonstration of said cot/caught difference. :) But I will join you in the pop-drinking pride! Miss you guys!!!
